A team of Richmond high school seniors joined Meals on Wheels on a delivery route to prepare for life beyond the classroom and to show up for someone else.
The students, all with developmental disabilities, are building real-world life skills through a work-based learning program supported by the Department of Aging and Rehabilitative Services, known as DARS.
Diane Snead Herson, a transition teacher at Richmond High School for the Arts, said hands-on experience is the most effective way to prepare her students.
CBS 6 along with the Scripps Howard Fund and Puritan Cleaners will match the first 40,000 meals raised May 7. To donate, find the link in our bio.

Thanks to the continued support of @anthembcbs Foundation and @feedingamerica , Feed Moreās Food as Medicine program is helping connect more neighbors with the nutritious food and support they need to thrive.
Over the past year, this partnership helped us hire our first full-time bilingual SNAP Program Navigator, strengthen connections between healthcare referrals and food access through our Help Line, and expand Food as Medicine partnerships in the Tri-Cities and rural communities across our service area.
And the impact is real. Patients participating in our Food as Medicine program at Walnut Hill Pharmacy in Petersburg continued to see declines in their A1C levels, with 50% of the sample achieving optimal A1C test results.
Together, weāre helping healthy food reach the neighbors who need it most.
When times get tough, our community shows up for one another. And weāre here to do the same for our Central VA neighbors struggling with hunger.
Feed Moreās online Agency Locator is here to connect you with nearby food pantries and emergency resources across the 34 cities and counties we serve.
Here's how it works:
š± Visit FeedMore.org
šClick on the Search Now button
š Enter your address or zip code
ā Find a list of food pantries near you, what they offer and if you need to make an appointment
Asking for help isnāt always easy - but youāre not alone.
Small acts of care can create lasting impact. Thank you for helping build a stronger, more nourished community, one neighbor, one meal, one moment at a time. š
More than 100 senior neighbors in Petersburg were suddenly displaced this week, and community responded. š
Yesterday, Feed More joined local partners to help deliver food and water neighbors staying in hotels across Hopewell and Petersburg.
Huge thanks to Lending Helping Hands, @livecasinova volunteers and our amazing Meals on Wheels volunteers for showing up with compassion, urgency and care.
This is what community looks like: neighbors helping neighbors.

It feels pretty good to give back, just ask Alex.
For his birthday each year, Alex skips the gifts and asks friends and family to support a food and funds drive for neighbors facing food insecurity.
This year for his 13th birthday, he raised enough to help provide more than 9,000 meals for seniors, families and kids across Central Virginia.
That kind of impact means real support for neighbors making tough choices, and helps ensure access to the nourishment they need today and in the days ahead.
Weāre incredibly grateful for Alexās generosity and the example heās setting. Proof that kindness doesnāt have an age limit, and impact can start right where you are. š
For so many families, support like this means everything. š
Behind every meal delivered is a moment of relief, dignity and care, especially for mothers doing their best to hold everything together for their families.
This is what community looks like.
Since it began on April 26, the 100K Meals campaign has raised enough to provide over 221,000 meals for members of our community.
Today (May 7) alone, our CBS 6 community donated over 125,000 meals! Puritan and the Scripps Howard Fund matched the first 40,000 meals donated today.
If you still want to give, you can donate through Saturday, May 9 by going to give.feedmore.org. You can also drop off non-perishable food items at any Puritan Cleaners location.
RVA is all about community - whether itās RVA Fridges providing free food or VOXRVA providing free stories. Weāre all in the same boat trying to help make life in RVA better. Thank you @rvacommunityfridges for all you do. @reagan.lafleurr@feedmoreinc , @riscjustice megluli
