Today was a beautiful day! For the last session of this class series for the month we were able to join @feed_phx in their community farm and get some hands on learning.
We talked about garden care and how there is always something you can do in your garden despite what season it is and what you do or do not have growing in your garden.
Like weeding and mulching. Staying on top of your âweedsâ is pretty essential to ensure your plants have the room and food they need to grow in and above the soil.
Mulching not only is aesthetically pleasing to any garden space lol but itâs a great ground cover to help with water retention, keeping weeds down and over time creates healthier soil. Feed your soil and you are most definitely feeding your plants.
It was nice to be able to help our community while also learning some new techniques. We were able to feed the goats all our compost so a real win win all around today! Grateful for the space and all the volunteers that came out and played with us in the dirt.
If youâre in the laveen area needing a space to grow your own food, send over a message and reserve your own garden box in our community garden! All beds are on drip irrigation and time and ready to be nurtured! Community and resources included đťđ
Stay tune for upcoming classes, workshops and gatherings!
In the beginning of the school year we put out our own grant to support schools and local communities.
We were grateful with how many wanted to work with us. Our winning community garden was @feed_phx . Weâve had the opportunity to work side by side with them over this last school year. Weâve supplied them with over 100 plant starts, many hands on workshops and awesome content for you all to see and share.
Feed PHX is a community garden space that is located in south Phoenix near 27th Ave and Dobbins. They are nested in an old dairy farm working with the community to provide a safe space for community activity, holistic organic practices with a farming and gardening lifestyle.
We were brought up to date on this project by (bill) @ivoryfudge2023 & (half) @ha_lf_ who work tirelessly on keeping the love and beauty of this project going.

Thank you @feed_phx for choosing our grant and support our vision of bringing medicinal, indigenous, and culinary herbs to the community for free and affordable prices. While enriching the youth and community with the knowledge of the land and history of how to take care of it and our families.

We are heartbroken by the loss of this beautiful human.
Repost from @ee77_mono
Part of âThere Is No âTheyâ: A Document of Homelessnessâ
I met Julien early on in my project documenting homelessness in the Valley. He was doing community outreach with Sonoran Prevention Works at University Park just north of the Zone. I was immediately drawn to his warmth, kindness, & vulnerability. I formally interviewed him in March 2023. He graciously sat for a portrait session with me two months later. I revisited my interview with and portraits of Julien over the last 24 hours. The following is Julien reflecting on his personal experiences with homelessness and addiction and the shame, guilt, and feeling of not belonging that all-too-often accompany them.
âWe've created an environment [and a] culture where it's illegal to exist without a home essentially, right. Because if you don't have a home, you don't have anywhere that you can be outside of public hours. So when the parks are closed, where do you go? You don't have anywhere to go. And the feelings I've experienced of walking into a Starbucks to use the bathroomâŚI don't even know if the workers cared, but that I have to hide my body or myself, my presence so [that] I donât cause a scene just so I can use the restroom. And that definitely translated into, as I got older, into staying at friends' houses, because I [was] stay[ing] at their house, but it's not like I was living there. It's not a good feeling adjusting to the sense that you're hidden from society or that you should be [hidden from society]. And so when you're not, you start to feel uncomfortable. At least that's what I was. I'd feel uncomfortable just existing. Which definitely didn't make it easier to get help. But luckily, you know, I had support and people who reminded me that they love me.â
We lost Julien earlier this week. All who ever got to know Julien are absolutely devastated by his passing. We love you Julien. You are deeply missed.
Julienâs family has created a GoFundMe to cover unexpected costs, including the care of Julienâs sweet and elderly dog Bruce.
