“There just weren’t any fish of value to be caught near the shore anymore.” This observation, shared by fishermen across Thailand, the Philippines, and Indonesia, captures the growing pressure on coastal communities as small-scale fishers struggle to compete with industrial fleets. Photojournalist @nicoletung documented their situations over nine months as part of her project, "Overfishing in Southeast Asia". Awarded the @prixcarmignac to produce this work, Tung traces both the environmental damage and human cost of industrial fishing, what she describes as “the intersectional nature of overfishing,” from collapsing ecosystems to labor exploitation. Now on view at the @bronxdocumentarycenter , the exhibition also highlights how hidden this industry remains. Tung notes she was unable to get onto commercial fishing vessels, as “many captains and boat owners are very wary of journalists.” A powerful look at an industry that often operates in murky waters. On view until April 26, 2026. Interview link in bio.

“I think of my practice as having two distinct modes: the maker and the editor. I don’t like to mix them. While I’m in the maker’s mode, I don’t want to analyze or judge what I’ve made. By keeping the film undeveloped, I could stay curious. Stay hungry to keep staging images. It helped me sustain the project for five years without overthinking it. When I finally developed the film, it felt like rediscovering a diary I’d forgotten I was writing.” —Josh Aronson (@jda.usa ), photographer

For photographers, nothing compares to seeing your work in print. A photo book turns your images into something people keep, display, and return to again and again. And now, it’s also one of the easiest ways to earn from your work. With Lulu’s (@luludotcom ) print-on-demand, you skip the long publishing timeline (and the boxes of unsold books in your living room). Upload your files, choose your format, preview a proof, and your book is ready to sell. Link in bio. #sponsored

In NYC, thousands of birds collide with glass towers, fall prey to traffic, or become tangled in string and wire. For most passersby, it’s a sad but forgettable moment. But a small, loosely organized group of volunteers—known as the New York City Bird Alliance (@nycbirdalliance ) Transporters—make it their job to stop, pick up the bird, and carry it to the Wild Bird Fund (@wildbirdfund ) on the Upper West Side, the city’s only wildlife rehabilitation center. One of those volunteers, photographer Travis Huggett (@travishuggett ), has been quietly documenting the people who do this work. The project began a few summers ago, when he discovered the transporters while searching for an activity for his son, who loves birds. “I asked if he’d like to help, and he was immediately into the idea,” he said. They’ve been ferrying birds together ever since.

This is your last chance to enter the @wellcomephotoprize and be in with a chance to win up to £10,000 and have your images exhibited in a major exhibition. Still need some inspiration? We’ve picked out some of the best-loved entries from over the years including this one from 2021. Remember, entries close 14 January 2025. ‘Tears of Drought’ by Sharwar Apo. Parents take their child to hospital in Rajshahi, Bangladesh, 10-15 miles across this drought-parched land, the mother holding a saline drip all the way. For much of the year, the land is dead like this, but for four months it’s flooded. Either way, safe drinking water is scarce, crops can’t grow, health problems abound – from dehydration to infection – and transport is limited. This family’s journey succeeded, and the child was treated for her diarrhoea. But many of those who attempt this journey are not so lucky. The 2025 competition seeks images from a human perspective that show climate change as a health crisis, expose the impact of mental health conditions or reinforce how outbreaks bring us together. The Wellcome Photography Prize is your platform to celebrate captivating stories of health, science and human experience, bringing together different perspectives from around the world. The 2025 Prize seeks entries that start conversations about humanity’s health challenges. #WPP25 #sponsored

Not long left to enter the @wellcomephotoprize . Still need some inspiration? We’ve picked out some of the best-loved entries from over the years including this one from 2020. Remember, entries close 14 January 2025. ‘Holding on to Daddy’ by Benji Reid. Benji suffers from long bouts of depression, and after a particularly difficult period he created this image as a 'love note' to his daughter for being there in his time of need. Both of them are engaged in acts of escapism – her mundanely, through her phone, and him fantastically, as a 'broken astronaut', floating up into the air. But he’s tethered to her, and the simple, comforting fact of her presence keeps him in the real world. The 2025 competition calls for images that sit at the intersection of art and science, addressing health-related issues from new and compelling perspectives. The @wellcomephotoprize returns to shine a light on the social implications of health issues around the world. To be in with a chance to win up to £10,000 and have your images exhibited in a major exhibition enter before 14 January 2025. #WPP25 From the series ‘Trans Woman: Between Colour and Voice’ by Yoppy Pieter. Trans women in Indonesia face many obstacles in life: it’s hard to get a job, and to access healthcare and other government services. All these difficulties were made much harder by Covid-19. “What was particularly interesting about winning the prize at that time was that it opened up numerous opportunities for collaboration and assignments related to health issues in photography. As a photographer living in a developing country, health issues are deeply intertwined with people's daily lives.” The 2025 competition continues its tradition of making underrepresented health issues visible and articulating what it is to live with them.
