âAs I walked out one May morningâ is a common refrain that can be found at the start of several traditional Beltane songs. The iteration used in this postâs title can be found in the folk song fittingly named âAs I roved outâ. Folk culture, being largely localised and often dismissed as a relic of our religious past, means that it is hard to track down quite when certain traditions, such as this song and line, began. Luckily for us, and certainly for the genre of folk horror, Beltane does have a rich history and continues to be celebrated by those either dedicated to the old ways or simply interested in preserving local colour. But what is Beltane?
Find out and discover why itâs the beating heart of folk horror over on The Panic Press. đżđ

âł Five days to go and we couldnât be more excited!
Fear Screen is heading to Roxy Movies in Middlesbrough for Screams Saves Lives, our very special horror charity screening, and we want you there with us!
The evening kicks off with a carefully curated selection of short horror films before we dive into the main feature Red Riding, the debut feature film from the brilliantly talented Craig Conway. If youâve ever wanted a peek behind the curtain of independent horror filmmaking, this is your night.
Craig himself will be joining us alongside producer and cinematographer Daniel Patrick Vaughan for a live Q&A so bring your burning questions about the film, the craft, the process, and anything else youâve ever wanted to ask the people who actually make it happen, along with a networking event to end the night on!
Hereâs the part that makes this one truly special: tickets start from just ÂŁ1. Thatâs right and when you book, you have the option to add a little extra on top, with every penny going directly to The CALM Zone, a vital charity working to prevent suicide and support mental health. Every pound genuinely makes a difference.
We only have a handful of tickets remaining, so donât leave it too late, these will go!
