Charlie Kelman is a Los Angeles–based designer whose practice examines the tension between protection, vulnerability, and the environments we build around ourselves. Working under the conceptual framework of Fear Safe, Kelman transforms cast-offs and discarded materials into garments that echo the physical processes of construction and destruction. His work considers labor not only as a method of making but as an ongoing practice of maintenance, repair, and mutual care.
Through hand-dyeing, mending, and iterative restoration, Kelman foregrounds the inevitability of degradation—revealing how clothing evolves alongside the bodies and social systems it serves. Each piece becomes a site where autonomy, equality, and responsibility intersect, reinforcing a sustainable network that links material, wearer, and world.
Rooted in an egalitarian belief that “if you cut everything away, we are all just humans born from a circle and living/dying on a circle,” Kelman’s work invites viewers to reconsider their relationship to clothing as something both protective and profoundly human.
Opening reception: Dec 6 / 7-10 PM
