A quote from an ex-service personnel reads "The skills, knowledge and flexibility that come with being ex-service personnel have been a real catalyst for my career at FCDO Services. I started as a Technical Installer, and today I head up the Chief Operating Officer's office."
What do you do when you find hidden listening devices inside a British diplomatic building?
In 1945, that was the challenge facing the Diplomatic Wireless Service. In response, they assembled a small team of engineers with a single task: make sure it didn’t happen again.
They swept British diplomatic buildings around the world, searching for eavesdropping devices that weren't supposed to be there. By 1958, the Cabinet Office had formally recognised them as the UK's national authority on counter-eavesdropping.
Today they're known as UK NACE. Eighty years on, the work continues.

The Diplomatic Wireless Service did a lot more than send telegrams.
From keeping British embassies connected and sweeping them for eavesdropping devices, to broadcasting across Europe and even building technology that didn't exist yet - the DWS quietly shaped British diplomacy for decades.
Swipe to find out what they actually got up to. ➡️

Before FCDO Services, there was the Diplomatic Wireless Service. And before that, there was Hanslope Park.
In 1942, a team of Britain's best communications specialists began working on some of the most classified projects of the war. Hidden in the Sussex countryside, they built Aspidistra — a 600kW transmitter powerful enough to jam enemy communications, disrupt rocket guidance, and broadcast black propaganda across occupied Europe.
The war ended, the work didn’t.

Wishing everyone a very Happy Easter! 🌸
However you're spending the day, we hope it's filled with warmth, happiness, and maybe a chocolate egg or two. 🐣

After World War Two ended, the work didn't stop.
The teams who had protected Britain's most sensitive wartime communications were given a new task - keeping British embassies around the world connected and secure in peacetime. The war was over, but the threats remained.
From 1 April 1946, the Diplomatic Wireless Service was officially recognised as part of the Foreign Office. The DWS became the foundation of everything we do today, and we're proud to celebrate that legacy.
This April, we're marking 80 years — follow along to discover more about our past.

"You don't need to be the loudest to be heard."
This #IWD2026, we welcomed Gurpreet Ghataore-Khera — Chartered Engineer and Business Development Manager at the Manufacturing Technology Centre — to share her story.
From Graduate Research Engineer to leading 15+ engineers and driving innovation in manufacturing, Gurpreet's journey proves what can happen when you back yourself and find your allies.
Speaking honestly about being underestimated, unconscious bias, and why women don't need to compete with each other— her message stayed with us. Back yourself, find your allies, and bring others with you. There is room for everyone.

This International Women's Day, "Give to Gain" isn't just a theme — it’s something we're putting into practice.
Engineering has been at the heart of FCDO Services since 1945 — but it's a field where women have historically been underrepresented. We're working to change that.
From apprenticeships to school outreach to collecting donations for women and children in our local community — we're investing in the next generation, because progress happens when we invest in each other.
