Today marks the 40th anniversary of the fatal FBI Miami shootout where, on April 11, 1986, during the pursuit of two extremely dangerous criminals, two agents, Jerry Dove and Benjamin Grogan, were killed, and several others were wounded. Although severely injured, Ed Mireles fired his shotgun one-handed to prevent the suspects from escaping, then charged the suspects, fatally wounding both. His heroic actions prevented further injury to his fellow agents and innocent citizens. We honor FBI service martyrs Special Agent Dove and Special Agent Grogan today. May they rest in peace.

In part two of this two-part episode, retired agent and FBI certified polygraph examiner George Olivo continues his review of the FBI’s polygraph program, interview skills he’s developed over his more than a decade as an FBI certified polygraph examiner, and of two of the cases he worked. The first case review covers his examination of Fernando Vazquez Garcia, suspected of possessing child sexual images, and a man claiming to be a Russian spy double agent. George is also interviewed about the truths and untruths surrounding polygraphs, and his latest season of Lie Detector: Truth or Deception, his TV series streaming on A&E and Hulu. In episode 389, part-one of George’s case review, he reviewed a polygraph exam he did of a woman suspected of murdering her boyfriend. George served in the FBI for 22 years. Listen to Episode 393 wherever you get your podcasts. #fbi #fbiagent #truecrimepodcast

Another milestone! I started my FBI in Books, TV, and Movies newsletter 10 years ago this month! The first email went out to 165 podcast listeners on April 21, 2016, and has since grown to a substantial audience of Reader Team members. I started it because I wanted to talk about crime fiction and dramas, help writers create more authentic FBI characters and plots, and discover among my listeners those interested in reading my books (exciting news to come soon). Sign up on my website. See link in bio. Once a month I send out an issue keeping readers up to date on the FBI in popular culture, providing a digest of my latest podcast episodes, my crime fiction and podcast recommendations, and an advance look at my most recent review of a TV show and movie for teachable moments about Bureau policies, procedures, and programs. When you join my Reader Team, I’ll send you the FBI Reading Resource—a colorful list of over 100 books about the FBI written by FBI agents who have been guests on my podcast, FBI Case File Review, and my FBI Reality Checklist—20 cliches and misconceptions about the FBI. P.S. - No podcast episode the first week of the month.
