I have a lot of feelings about being a mother each one of these figures I sculpt holds a different one. I started having postpartum depression when I was probably 5 months pregnant with my first baby and despite therapy, doctor changes, hospital changes and medicine it got worse and worse and worse with every pregnancy. Many things kept me above water, sometimes by just a nose, my mother, my husband, my children and a list of other mothers. It’s an experience that has completely transformed me into something I’m still learning to see and understand and love. Now mine are all three in school and it feels like smoke is still coming off my back from a very long walk through fire. I thank all my beloved people for the view of that time I get to experience now from this new place.
PLANT PEOPLE! @plant_sale_la comes back for our 4th annual spring market @moca Geffen Sat May 16 from 11-4!!!! Please come and support all the stalwart vendors that show up in the name of verdure! I will be bringing some ceramic wall hangings ( I work on these little by little all year long, making beads with off cuts and clay remnants) and a small selection of potted plants from behind the studio / garage.
Revisiting and challenging the historically dominant narratives of large-scale abstraction, sculpture, and Land Art, this group exhibition engages with the legacy of formalism while confronting colonial histories, memory, and the natural world. Through diverse practices and a distinctly feminist, material sensitivity, the artists reimagine the relationship between the body, object, and environment, offering new sculptural languages that both honor and unsettle the conventions of the past. Expanding beyond an initial focus on metal, the works bring material and conceptual depth to question the history of monumentality in sculpture and to propose renewed ways of thinking about form, space, and relation.
Heavy Metal is curated by LAMAG curator, Nancy Meyer.
This exhibition includes works by:
Kelly Akashi, Miya Ando, Barbara Berk, Amy Bessone, Tanya Brodsky, Beatriz Cortez, Claire Chambless, Alika Cooper, Paige Emery, Katie Grinnan, Ting Ying Han, Andrea Hidalgo, Kelly Lamb, Abigail Lucien, Fay Ray, Brie Ruais, Carolyn Salas, Davina Semo, Kelly Wall, and Lisa Williamson.
To all my beautiful friends and family who came out to support me in this show I love you. I’ve been a hermit the last decade it feels. Thank you for the long leash. Feeling very bonded to you all, to LA, to artists here. Hope to see you soon! @alto_beta
LA Art Week is here, and I’ll be at several exhibitions and fairs, emerging from my postpartum cave with fresh eyes and looking past the obvious to the work I think would inspire you.
First on my list: Mothers and Spiders by Fay Ray @fayraystudio . This ongoing ceramic series begins with conversations and a 3D scan of an intimate moment between mother and child, translating that tenderness into hand-built clay. The glazes melt and fold in ways that can’t be fully controlled. Movies often show only the extremes, the suffering or bliss. Fay explores the full spectrum of emotions in these new works. 🕷️
I’m also watching Alto Beta @alto_beta closely. Brad Eberhard has been running this artist-run gallery in Altadena since 2022, and they just reopened at a new location on Lincoln Avenue after the fires. That kind of resilience is worth celebrating!
More coming all week! I’m making a list of my top shows and presentations this week. Let me know if you want to come along or get my recs! @friezeofficial@post_fair@felixartfair@enzo.losangeles@butterartfair
