The Great Wall of China is a 13,000-mile-plus series of fortifications built over 2,000 years (roughly 7th century B.C. to 17th century A.D.) to protect Chinese empires from northern nomadic invaders. While initiated by Qin Shi Huang to connect early walls, most iconic, stone-brick sections seen today were constructed during the Ming Dynasty (1368–1644) Beyond defense, the wall served as border control, allowing for the regulation of trade (such as the Silk Road) and protection of economic interests. Though it never fully prevented invasions, it remains a powerful symbol of Chinese strength and cultural identity.
