Day 89: The Only Ones - Even Serpents Shine 12”(1979) A dark take on power pop, a sleazy heavy lidded batch of songs that rock with a chilling vibe. Peter Perrett’s voice is somehow morose and jovial simultaneously. An extremely confident and focused album that covers serious themes but isn’t self serious. The Only Ones true masterpiece. #theonlyones #evenserpentsshine #powerpop #punk #pubrock #vinylcollection #recordaday

Day 88: Offenders - Endless Struggle 12”(1985) This band flew under my radar until the pandemic, chalk it up to no one I knew ever playing or talking about it when I was a teenager. Might be one of the best fast punk records of the era that bizarrely doesn’t seem to get the credit it deserves. Lighting fast musicianship and vocals that is more furious than show-y, melodic but without being pop punk. Just a solid album of hyper 80s Texas HC. #Offenders #endlessstruggle #rabidcatrecords #80shardcore #punk #texas #vinylcollection #recordaday

Day 87: Gary Numan + Tubeway Army - Replicas 12”(1979) Buying this record in the late 90s unlocked a door to an alternate world where punk could be pop music that was dark and more atmospheric. Gary Numan is like an unfunny goth version of Mark Mothersbaugh with bleak minimoog jams that conjure cold machmen instead of satirical booji boys. The concept and vibe and songwriting are still intriguing 40+ years later, like most art about an increasingly cold robotic dystopia it has aged into a prescient soundtrack of the future. #garynuman #garynumanandtubewayarmy #replicas #minimoog #beggarsbanquetrecords #vinylcollection #recordaday

Day 86: 9 Shocks Terror – Zen And The Art Of Beating Your Ass 12”(1999) One side of the metaphorical coin of 90s Cleveland HC with a Japanese influence with Integrity on the flip side. So many commonalities with completely different approaches and vibes. 9 Shocks Terror in the late 90s seemed like the gold standard for no frills raging HC with a slew of records and an exceptionally wild live show. 20 years later the occasional show isn’t as wild but they definitely still hold up against most contemporary bands. #9shocksterror #zenandtheartofbeatingyourass #devourrecords #clevelandhardcore #punk #hardcore #vinylcollection #recordaday

Day 85: Necrot - Mortal 12”(2020) A modern classic of death metal, just unrelenting Gatling gun approach that pushes the genre forward while using all of the time honored genre hallmarks. The riffs have just enough pyrotechnics to not become repetitive and the drumming keeps things exceptionally propulsive. Oaklands Necrot have been putting in work for a long time and this record is a pretty staggering feat especially since their previous album was so strong. #necrot #mortal #deathmetal #tankcrimesrecords #oakland #vinylcollection #recordaday

Day 84: Motörhead - Overkill 12”(1979) It took me until I turned 40 to actually buy a Motörhead record. They’re a band that you hear out and about so frequently that I never prioritized getting their records, there always seemed to be some new band to discover first. Hard blues based rock is also not usually my thing no matter how influential a band may be. Yet Overkill the album and especially the titular track really are just undeniably ripping. The power Motörhead conjures as a 3 piece is nearly unmatched, maybe I’ll get Bomber when I’m 50. #motorhead #overkill #lemmy #rock #metal #punk #vinylcollection #recordaday

Day 83: Monorchid - Let Them Eat 12”(1997) The natural continuation of Circus Lupus, but more revved up and flamboyant. White boy DC funk rhythms pared down and inverted into aggressive punk. Chris Thomson’s even more unhinged and bratty vocals confidently skewering underground punk and it’s social trappings. These songs jump off the turntable, angular guitar riffs caterwauling around leaping bass lines held down by sparse yet strong drumming. This album really hit me hard at 19 and still sounds brash at 41. #monorchid #themonorchid #punk #dcpunk #postpunk #noiserock #vinylcollection #recordaday

Day 82: Mission Of Burma - Signals, Calls, and Marches 12”(1981) Mission Of Burma always sound British to me, like a heavier Gang Of Four and they definitely aren’t singing with Boston accents. This record sounds surprisingly fresh for being 41 years old, the recording really highlights all of the instruments. That’s When I Reach For My Revolver is just all time classic punk song, perfectly catchy and moody. Really wish the Academy Fight Song 7” tracks replaced the last two songs on this 12” though, the steam definitely runs out especially since the A side has so much more focused energy. #missionofburma #signalscallsandmarches #punk #postpunk #vinylcollection #recordaday

Day 81: Minor Threat - Out Of Step 12”(1983) I know some people think this record is weak compared to their 7”s but I like the longer more complicated song structures on here. The thing that really holds it together is Jeff Nelsons machine like drumming and Ian MacKaye just has a great voice for punk. My biggest complaint is the terrible bass sound, but overall this record still gets me excited, maybe it’s just forever engrained in me since I heard it at such a young age but Minor Threat just has an energy that most bands don’t, even when they’re stretching their legs a little. #minorthreat #dischordrecords #harDCore #punk #outofstep #straightedge #vinylcollection #recordaday
