Congratulations to FAU sophomore Sammy Hawa, a Multimedia Studies major, on his recent nomination for Best Director at the 2026 National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Student Production Awards (Suncoast Chapter) for Owl TV’s original series Blood Pledge.
Originally from Fort Lauderdale, Hawa has been making films since the age of 11. He has produced multiple short films submitted to national competitions, with one even screening in local theaters.
Blood Pledge marks his first long-form web series and a major milestone for Owl TV, bringing together a full production team and showcasing the exceptional talent being developed right here at FAU.
Congratulations, Sammy!
Nine SCMS students got an incredible real-world look at TV news this week, visiting WPTV-Channel 5 in West Palm Beach for a two-hour immersive tour of the station.
Students explored the assignment desk, two control rooms, and the broadcast studio — accompanied by Erin Maharaj (FAU Career Center Assistant Director), SCMS Associate Director and journalism instructor Neil Santaniello, SCMS film professor and Coordinator of Experiential Learning Matthew Elfenbein, and Addiel Gomez, Director of Media and Communications for Student Affairs.
At the station, students connected with Sports Reporter Kendall Hyde and Reporter Brooke Chau, who walked them through how a weather forecast comes together on live TV using the studio's green screen and cameras. Throughout the visit, Neil Bennett, Senior Talent Acquisition Partner at the E.W. Scripps Company, shared detailed insights into the station and the television news industry.
This is experiential learning in action! 🎓

Before Florida Atlantic's Distinguished Alumni Ceremony on April 10, 2026, SCMS Multimedia Journalism graduate Patrick Martin, M.S. (Columbia University) met with SCMS Multimedia Journalism graduates Kim Casey and Kristan Reynolds as well as with SCMS Multimedia Journalism undergraduates Ben Cohen and Isaiah Ransom in the Robert J. and Inez Persson Bailyn Conference Room for a lively and highly illuminating Q & A session about his wealth of experiences as a NBC News producer.
As the photos document, Bob Bailyn, an award-winning journalist and journalism professor with 40 years of experience and his wife, Inez Persson Bailyn, a pioneer female journalist from Sweden, were approvingly looking on from their picture taken in France in 2002. Both SCMS Graduate Teaching Assistants Kim Casey and Kristan Reynolds had received $ 3,000 SCMS Inez Persson Bailyn Scholarships in Journalism before enrolling in the SCMS M.A. in Communication Studies program.
NBC News Producer Patrick Martin graduated in May 2016 from Florida Atlantic's School of Communication and Multimedia Studies with a B.A. in Multimedia Journalism. In May 2017, he received an M.S. in Journalism from Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism.
Patrick Martin's professional career started as a Breaking News Reporter with the Treasure Coast Newspapers. An SCMS Palm Beach Post / James M. Cox, Jr. Foundation Scholarship covered his travel expenses during this internship from May to August 2015. From June 2017 to August 2017, he worked as a Business Reporter / Intern at Bloomberg News, New York. He first joined NBC News, New York, in September 2017 as a News Associate with the Weekend Nightly News.
From 2004 to 2013, Patrick Martin served with the 82nd Airborne, US ARMY, stationed in Fort Bragg, N.C. He was deployed on combat missions in Iraq and Afghanistan and was awarded a Purple Heart as a Heavy Weapons Section Leader when his section came under heavy rocket fire in Afghanistan.
The photo above shows him in the SCMS Robert J. and Inez Persson Bailyn Conference Room together with Dr. Michael Hofmann, whose U.S. Journalism class he took in Spring 2015 and with Neil Santaniello, M.S., who mentored his journalistic career, starting with the SCMS News and News Reporting class.
