Florida Atlantic University alumni are making waves in @Netflix ’s #AlltheSharks! 🦈 This high-stakes conservation competition follows four teams racing across six countries to document the most shark species. Alumnus Chris Malinowski, Ph.D. (M.S., ‘11), and alumna Rosie Moore, M.S. (‘21), are both competing on the show. Malinowski (@shark_docs ) is an affiliate scientist at Florida Atlantic University's Charles E. Schmidt College of Science and director of research at @oceanfirstinstitute . He also co-advises a graduate student studying shark ecology in the Florida Keys. Moore (@rosiekmoore ), a two-time alumna and citizen science manager at The International SeaKeepers Society, represents team Landsharks - named for her and her teammates Midwest roots. Catch the series and support our alums on its global premiere, Juy 4 on Netflix. Read more about Chris and Rosie and their journeys at the link in our bio or on fau.edu/science. What a momentous day! 🎓 The Charles E. Schmidt College of Science celebrated the Class of 2026 commencement on May 8, featuring a true Florida Atlantic icon as our keynote speaker: Juan Carlos “JC” Santana @jcsantanaihp . As a renowned functional fitness expert, entrepreneur, author, and proud FAU double alumnus, JC shared the powerful wisdom that has defined his 30+ year career: “The most exciting times of your life are still ahead. Every time you overcome an obstacle, you will realize that you are stronger than you ever thought you could be.” 💪 From founding the Institute of Human Performance (@ihpfit ) to his early days strolling his son around the Boca Raton campus, JC’s journey is the ultimate testament to the "crossroads where preparation meets opportunity." Congratulations, Class of 2026! ❤️💙🦉 We can’t wait to see the impact you’ll make on the world. Read more at the🔗 link in our bio.

Thousands of black-tip sharks migrate right past our beaches every year 🦈 For decades, Professor Stephen Kajiura, Ph.D. has tracked them using GPS and cameras and what he’s seeing is changing. As ocean temperatures rise, more sharks are staying farther north, which means more activity closer to shore. Featured by CNN, his research is helping keep beachgoers informed and aware.

From an FAU biology student to a global pioneer in cancer research! We are incredibly proud of our alumna, Maria Jasin, Ph.D. (B.S. '78), who was inducted into the @faualumni Hall of Fame. Dr. Jasin’s groundbreaking work on DNA repair and her role in the first "gene editing" experiments have fundamentally changed how we understand and treat cancer. Her journey is a testament to the power of an education in the College of Science @floridaatlantic . 🧬🔬 🔗 Link in bio to read her incredible story.

A rare glimpse inside a sea turtle egg reveals more than beauty — it’s helping solve a critical conservation challenge 🐢✨ Doctoral student, Gabby Carvajal, captured a striking image of a late-stage embryo, earning second place in the Seventh Annual Art of Science contest. But beyond the artistry, her work is driving a breakthrough: finding a fast, humane way to determine a hatchling’s sex. Why it matters: Rising temperatures are producing overwhelmingly female populations — putting the future of sea turtles at risk. Carvajal’s research is helping give them a fighting chance. @faumarinelab with mentor Jeanette Wyneken, Ph.D. @fauscience Permit #MTP-073

New FAU innovation could save sharks from accidental fishing incidents 🪝🦈 Stephen Kajiura, Ph.D., from @FAUScience Charles E. Schmidt College of Science, has been awarded a $15,000 Innovation Pilot Award to advance a patent-pending shark-repellent method that’s practical, affordable and effective. His device pairs zinc and graphite on a fishing line to create a tiny electric field that sharks can sense - and want to avoid - without affecting catches of valuable fish like tuna and swordfish. #FAUResearch #Sharks
