During our summer 2023 Making Well programme, we were joined by architect and cob builder, Hugh Conway Morris. Hugh joined us as a visiting craft practitioner and over the course of 8 weeks shared with us his love of soil and earth and cob dancing!. With Hugh's guidance we were all delighted to have taken part in the creation of a beautiful new cob oven for Llanfellte. We very much look forward to Hugh joining us again later this year.
Learn more about Hugh's craft teaching experience at Making Well 👇
"I found my experience of being a crafter with Making Well profoundly uplifting. It brought together those things I care most about in this life – the craft of beauty, outreach and sharing this with others, and the beautiful setting of the natural environment. I could hardly ask for a better place to work, with the weather streaming up the valley from the west (although it hardly rained in all my time there), and the clouds dappling the distant mountains with light and shadow, an ever-changing and health-giving rhythm.
I frequently reassured myself that if you are not learning while you are teaching, you’re probably not teaching very well. Thus while I can bring my experience in cob building and carpentry to bear for all to enjoy, Making Well was truly collaborative, with different people excelling at different approaches, and making their own discoveries along the way, helping me to see things in new ways. Combined with a gentle programme of sit-spots, contemplation, good chat and fine outdoor-cooked food, I know that I benefited greatly from taking part; the progress with participants from the first day of quiet enjoyment to the final session of laughter and song assures me that each person took something and gained something."
