Love letters . . . This act is a love letter to Black queer folks in nightlife. I know it's hard out here. Things might feel impossible and unfair. LET'S TALK ABOUT MONEY . . . First things first: I'm a PROFESSIONAL full time artist. Unless it's been clearly communicated to me that the performance is a donation, I expect to be paid for my art. What's undercutting? When you accept a rate below the industry standard. You should find out what the industry standard is where you perform most often, and then not accept any base rate (the amount of money you are guaranteed before tips) below that industry standard. Your rates should increase in line with things like years of experience, titles, specialized skills, etc. Well, what about...? Exceptions (for me) include fundraiser shows, and shows where I have a personal relationship with the production team. Those are spaces where I feel good about negotiating compensation. What does not feel good is when someone who does not know me asks me to lower my rate. You wouldn't ask one of the Ru girls to charge less, so why would you ask me? Are my bills any less real? What about a door split? Well, if a producer cannot tell me the average amount of money each person made from the door split, that's a 🚩. I've done for splits and walked away with less than $50 including tips. That's not worth the time and energy I put into performing, not to mention makeup, costume, and travel. At this point I'm my career, I'm not leaving my house for less than $100. If I can't be assured of at least that, I have to turn down the gig. What should producers do? When I produce I understand that I am taking on the financial risk of the show. I make sure my bank account is in a place where even if there are zero tickets sold I can pay the booked performers at least $150 each. Sometimes that means there's only one other person in the show. But paying people a living wage is part of my production ethos. Book drag kings. Pay us a living wage. Stop making us beg for scraps. I, for one, am sick of it. Video from @smoke.show.nola .
