Honourable Mention: For a Few Dates More by Carolina Contreras Alvarez, Mona Lecoultre, Stefano Martelli und Hoi Ming Du Hardly any of the submitted works dealt with the topic of resilience as thoroughly and projectively as For a Few Dates More. And none of the entries sparked such controversy. The almost 14 minutes that the film lasts immerse you in an alien-idyllic world, newly emerging from the waste of our consumer society: The story of development begins in an alienated plastic desert, among the tomato tents of Almería. It tells of the unbearable wear and tear on the resources of water, earth, energy and people, as well as of the huge mountains of waste and social costs that arise from the seemingly limitless cultivation of tomatoes and vegetables in Andalusia – and of the farmer Willi, who sets out from Zurich to counter this abuse of the earth with the means of architecture. In Willi’s world, there is room for all living things, including Mohammad, who goes from being a vegetable slave to a self-confident sharecropper – and thus seems a bit like Robinson Crusoe’s Friday. It is not only this latent neo-colonialist undertone that contaminated the professionally made presentation in the discussion – the actual architectural project also provoked questions. The honorable mention recognizes the depth of content, the commitment of the authors on site, and the engaging realization – deducting the somewhat alienating discords. #resilience #competition #students #youngarchitects #fasticino #werkbauenwohnen #i2a

First Prize: L03, Unknown Characters by Anna Bruni and Massimo Contini Resilience may involve transformation, it may require elasticity, it may mean coming back into shape, but can it, but can it also lead to different shape, a new appearance? The authors are asking. The jury was intrigued by these alien forms seeking a new life and a new destiny, coming from the past and projecting into the future, reassembled in a different conformation. In an indefinite past, if assembled differently, perhaps these forms served specific uses they no longer serve. We sense, however, that this fixity isn’t destined to last forever, but eventually these bodies will be decomposed again and again will return to life through a new transformation. The notion of resilience, the notion of transformation in time, of versatility and elasticity, appears thus in another perspective. #firstprize #competition #resilience #fasticino #bsafas #werkbauenundwohnen #annabruni #massimocontini

First Prize: Climate Walk by Klara Jörg and Julian Raffetseder « Dear jury members, the buildings in which we will live in 2050 will be to a large extent the existing buildings of today. » With this succinct sentence, Klara Jörg and Julian Raffetseder introduce the folding plan “Climate Walk”, which they have developed with as much fun as care. In their approach, the control of sunlight, shading, ventilation, horizon elevation and porosity form the basis for the proposed interventions both in existing and added structures. In fact, the variety of climates become here the starting point for urban diversity. The classical boundaries between architecture and the other environment related disciplines are no longer relevant. This creates an interesting inversion of the very question of resilience: if we take the resilience of buildings as a given, how resilient are our current disciplines to deal with the tasks ahead? #firstprize #competition #resilience #fasticino #bsafas #werkbauenundwohnen #klarajörg #julianraffetseder

First Prize: Torn and Sewed Cloth by Stefan Costache and Ioana Suciu In a series of four photographs, a square piece of bright red cloth is being held up, torn apart, stitched together, and finally, held up again. On one level this work is a rather straightforward interpretation of this year’s competition theme, resilience. It can be seen as the ability to recover, restore and get back into shape. The original piece is, in the last picture, transformed into two pieces, united as a new whole with wrinkles and folds along the vertical, stitched line. This work a convincing, conceptual winner is that it can be viewed on multiple levels, direct as well as indirect ones. It is straightforward and ambiguous at the same time. #firstprize #competition #resilience #fasticino #bsafas #werkbauenundwohnen #stefancostache #ioanasuciu
