On November 9th @hollywoodscoring reopened the legendary @unitedrecording studio, and invited Ben Zecker and I to collaborate on a demo we titled ‘Prelude’. We wanted to write a simple piece that allowed my wonderful friends and colleagues of the Hollywood Studio Symphony to play without click or headphones and enjoy the sound of this iconic studio.
It’s always a treat whenever I get to step away from the violin and hear my friends play and make magic. Enjoy the beautifully performed solos by Ben Jacobson (violin), Luanne Homzy (violin), Andrew Duckles (viola), and Andrew Shulman (cello) Thank you Noah, Adam, and Edouard for this experience. Special thanks as well to Frank Ciampi for his beautiful and soulful mix, and Greg Huegel for producing this beautiful doc style short, and Tim Davies for lending his legendary skills, knowledge, and one of his minutes so we could do a pickuhp.
Make sure to contact @hollywoodscoring if you want to record in this legendary studio that has seen the likes of Frank Sinatra, Michael Jackson, Madonna, The Rolling Stones, Luis Miguel, and Jay Z.

Blast from the past found today: Just about seven years ago I got to record a piece as part of the @la.fci along a bunch of other great composers and friends, conducting my amazing colleagues and friends of the Hollywood Studio Symphony (I think this was basically the second or third take). Six months before that our family dog Jürgen (or Guensis) passed away while my parents were visiting me for my PhD graduation at UCLA. So when I started writing the piece just a couple of months later I wanted to write something imagining him just moving on to some great adveture. He was the sweetest boy who slept at the foot of my bed whenever I came back to Mexico from the US.
It was the second time I write a piece for a pet that passed. The previous time was during my undergrad and it was to commemorate my childhood dog Tacho who passed away just a couple of weeks before I moved to New York for college. I will try to find a recording of that piece to share it with you all. An additional special memory from this recording is having the amazing Mike Lang play piano in the orchestra and I smile everytime I hear him come out in the texture beautifully in the second part of this excerpt. He was wearing his iconic Boulez t-shirt that day.
Shoutout to @scottmichaelsmith_ for the amazing mix. This is this is the moment that started a friendship and collaboration.
Last summer I had the opportunity to compose a demo for a very cool project, and while it didn’t pan out I had a blast researching some period instruments and music to mix with the modern score sensibilities. I’m lucky to work with all the amazing players who kindly worked on this, including the talented @callum.armstrong.piping who recorded the Aulos solo in Berlin .
Special thanks to all Ben Zecker who helped me with production, Noah Gladstone and Adam Michalak at @hollywoodscoring for their support and talents, and Yan Perchuk for his amazing mix.

Morita tierna! Te vamos a extrañar mucho. Ahora ya puedes correr de nuevo con Elvis. Los mejores amigos y perfectos guardianas. Te queremos por siempre.
A few highlights from San Bernardino Symphony “Revolutionaries”
Two musical revolutionaries bookended the concert: We performed the iconic opening moment of Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony and closed with the world premiere of Andres Martin’s “Morgante,” a violin concerto in memoriam of trailblazing conductor Michael Morgan, performed by Samuel Vargas.
Our Associate Conductor Raphaela Lacerda led the SBSO in a command performance of Arturo Marquez's “Danzon no. 2,” and we presented a second world premiere, “Al Pie de la Montaño” by SBSO Composer in Residence, Fernando Arroyo Lascurain.
We can’t wait to see you all in July!
On a special bonus episode of #SignificantOthers Liza talks to Fernando Arroyo about the musical collaboration of Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn. Plus, he explains what an orchestrator is, and much more. Listen at the link in bio.
I had the pleasure of being the guest on yesterday’s episode of Significant Others with @lpowelobrien for @teamcocopodcasts . We touched on many subjects regarding the collaborative aspect of being a composer and musician. This episode was a companion to their Tuesday episode on Billy Strayhorn.
Run now and listen to others episodes. This podcast explores the people behind some legendary figures. Some of my favourite episodes are those about Sophia Tolstoy and Elizabeth Förster-Nietzsche. Find this gem anywhere you get your Podcasts!
NEW COMMISSION/PREMIERE ALERT: Coming to the California Theater on May 25th of 2024, a new commission by Mtro. Anthony Parnther and The San Bernardino Symphony Orchestra titled “Al Pie De La Montaña” (“At The Foot Of The Mountain”).
As the new composer in residence of the San Bernardino Symphony, I look forward to presenting this new composition depicting the rich history of the region with my friends and colleagues of this wonderful orchestra.
