Russ and Shevaughn were so excited to attend the topping out of Avantons, The Beca yesterday. We love this design, and are so excited to see what HG construction are building. The Beca was inspired by New Yorks detailing and Londons bricks and is setting a new quality for housing on the Old Kent Road. The first building in our Ruby Triangle masterplan. The whole team should be very proud of what they have achieved:
Thank you Housing Growth Partnership, Alan Camp Architecte, CGP MEP, Pillar project managers, BB7 Engineers.
Thank you to IDA Design; Waterman, Hydrock, Boyer, WSP, Point2,Quartet, Quod, Hoare Lea
We’ve added everyone to the best of our ability but we might have missed son of the consultants involved.

Hong Kong's skyline is more than a feat of engineering - it's a symbol of the city's identity, ambition, and resilience. From the daring descent into Kai Tak Airport to the shimmering towers of Victoria Harbour, the city has long embraced verticality as a statement of progress. But as Hong Kong continues to evolve, so too must its urban language.
A less celebrated typology has quietly re-emerged: the "wall." Historically, the Kowloon Walled City was its most extreme incarnation - dense, chaotic, and impenetrable. Today, this form is being replicated along the Kai Tak Runway, where two parallel residential blocks dominate the waterfront obstructing the views from both Kowloon and Hong Kong Island. But this is not a lament. It's a moment to rethink.
Cities thrive when their urban networks are intertwined with public parks and gardens, not as isolated green zones, but as part of a continuous civic fabric. At Kai Tak, the rooftop garden above the TOD becomes an elevated, accessible space that could serve as a pivotal point between movement, landscape, and community, stitching the city together.
At the southern tip of the runway, we envisage a tower development that acts as a modern 'lighthouse', a beacon of openness and possibility. Together with One Island East, it would form the eastern gateway to Victoria Harbour. With panoramic views, ample public spaces, and a design that prioritises people over density, this development could become a landmark destination symbolising Hong Kong’s renewed urban imagination.
This is our chance to honour the legacy of Kai Tak and redefine waterfront living for future generations. Now is the time to celebrate a resilient, ambitious and open identity.

We are delighted to be shortlisted for an RIBA London Award for the retrofit of Lots Road Powerstation - the power station sits at the heart of the Chelsea Waterfront masterplan and last month opened to the public for the first time in over 100 years. We have been so lucky to work on this magnificent building - collaborating with Formation Architects, Buro Happold, Randle Siddeley, AECOM and JRL group along the way.
Our Managing Partner - Shevaughn Rieck says “It’s exciting to see this extraordinary project coming to life. There is no residential experience like it in London, and the team needed to take an incredibly creative, thoughtful design approach to ensure that Powerhouse would do justice to the majestic architecture of the old power station. We carefully restored its historic red brick and terracotta walls, and our priority was to honour the building’s rich industrial heritage while also delivering a new contemporary landmark for many generations to come”

In continuation of celebrating 40 years of the Newcastle Quayside Masterplan, here is an insight into The Civic Boulevard and Pilgrim Street.
One of the defining characteristics of Farrells’ urban design is the attention paid to place-making. The ‘Civic Boulevard’ reflects the desire to rebalance the centre of Newcastle. Pilgrim Street at its northern end faced an impassible traffic gyratory. The vision for Pilgrim Street retained the best of found places, revitalising the retail heart of Newcastle.

As we are leading up to the 40th anniversary of Newcastle Quayside’s masterplan, we are reflecting on the legacy of Newcastle through Farrells and kicking off with a series on some of our projects that contributed in shaping this city.
The International Centre for Life (ICL) is located at Forth Banks, an area of Newcastle with a rich and intriguing history. Opened in 2000, ICL is a symbol of Newcastle University’s pre-eminence in the field of genetic research. Sir Terry Farrell’s vision for ICL had grown into a landmark urban regeneration project, celebrating and reviving elements of Newcastle’s past.
The futuristic complex is a testimony to
Sir Terry Farrell’s support of Robert Venturi’s manifesto in his book Complexity and Contradiction in Architecture, touching on elements which are hybrid and rich in meaning rather than a pure and clean approach to design.

The RIBA North East Small Practice network recently hosted an exhibition @vanegallery titled COALFACE25 with both original and new works of architectural significance to the North East. We were pleased to see the work for the international Centre for Life sparking conversations. Thanks @samproudphoto for the great images.
With the 40th anniversary coming up of the Newcastle Quayside masterplan that Farrells delivered for MUSE we are looking forward to the upcoming Farrell Centre exhibition and delving back into the practices work in Newcastle with some upcoming posts sharing some of this.

FARRELLS is pleased to celebrate the release of the re-vamped, city-wide 𝗛𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗞𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗨𝗿𝗯𝗮𝗻 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻 𝗚𝘂𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀 for the @plandgovhk Planning Department, the Government of HKSAR
The updated Guidelines set out concise principles for movement networks, public realm, and building design. Presented in a graphic-led, accessible format, they are intended to guide and inspire thinking rather than prescribe outcomes — 𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝘆, 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝘁.
Recognising that cities are both shaped by — and drivers of — their unique and evolving contexts, the HKUDG provide a flexible framework to guide the future of the city’s urban experience.

Farrells would like to thank all who joined us on Friday to pay tribute to our founder, Sir Terry Farrell at the memorial which was held in one of his most loved London buildings, 1 Embankment Place.
We would like to extend our gratitude to @pwc_uk for hosting colleagues, partners, friends and family. Thank you to Shevaughn Rieck, Sir Peter Murray, Gavin Erasmus and Max Farrell for their heart-warming speeches. Thank you to Max and Luke Farrell for presenting the powerful short film to commemorate Terry.
As part of the evening, we invited everyone to sketch on a napkin as Terry would often draw in reflection during his lunch meals out. We were moved by how many messages and drawings that have stacked up throughout the evening, an impactful statement to how many stories have been shared with Terry and his influence through and beyond the world of architecture and the built environment.
We also would like to thank @riba for gifting copies of ‘Lives in Architecture’ for this special evening.
Thank you,
The Farrell Family & Farrells

This month, Partner Peter Barbalov contributed a piece to Planning In London, diving into place-making and imaginative architecture.
“Architecture, urban design, masterplanning and regeneration, are about ‘place-making’. This means making places that people can connect with and can feel comfortable in. They are places within which people can go about their activities; places that have a presence and significance; places that give identity and image to an area, invoke a sense of civic pride and contribute to the well-being socially, culturally and economically of the local and wider community. Place-making is concerned with space, form and identity and it is, the most profoundly important activity of architecture and urbanism.”
