This is a special one ~ ‘Alice’s Amphora,’ a piece conceived to celebrate my mama @alicelouisewaters ’s 80th birthday this month. I had been wanting to make something that honors her love of flowers and arranging, and that takes inspiration from her kitchen collection. It was either going to be a tiny bud vase (ha!) or a large statement vase, and we settled on the latter. It’s based on the design of an old Etruscan-style amphora she’s had in the corner of her kitchen for as long as I can remember. The large collection of seasonal blooms or boughs that lives there is a defining part of the total aesthetic of the room and I have always loved that you could tell exactly where you were in time and space by observing what flowers were gathered there. This piece was made for @permanentcollection in collaboration with Niki Shelley of @manueveryday , an extraordinarily talented Berkeley-based ceramicist who understood precisely what we were looking for and brought her incredible craft to bear in this design. As for the rich green color, it’s what my mom loves about it most, “It’s the color of nature, and it pulls the greens of the garden into the kitchen.” Happy birthday mama. Love you! I'm *very* excited to share that my dear friend @gretacaruso and I have just launched the Green Spoon: a new @substackinc (in layman terms: a chic newsletter) about cooking simple and delicious food for kids and their exhausted parents. Greta and I had our daughters within a month of each other last year and have been in constant conversation about how best to nourish their bodies and encourage the development of adventuresome palates. In our weekly dispatches, we’ll be sharing loads of simple recipes we’ve created during this time — things that will delight your littlest ones but also feed the rest of your family. We’ll be featuring interviews with other parents, cooks, nutritionists and more, as well as lists of favorite tools, equipment, gifts and off-the-shelf baby foods we don’t hate. You can read our first post at the link in bio! If you're into it, please subscribe and share with any other beleaguered parent or caretaker who loves food but is currently scraping by on the dregs of their children's meals. God knows, that’s been me! 💌

Happy Mother’s Day to this woman who’s been known to use a leaf of wild sorrel in lieu of sunscreen in a pinch. I love you more than I could possibly express in a caption. Thank you for always irrepressibly being you. ❤️ @alicelouisewaters

To celebrate Mother’s Day this year please consider donating to help Palestinian mother Israa and her three daughters whose lives were upended and torn apart by the war in Gaza. They’ve been evacuated safely to Mexico City but need help to get essential medical care and rebuild their lives! Read more and donate with the link in our stories and bio.

In her latest show, Tacita Dean guides audiences through landscapes of ghostly chalk drawings to the vivid intensity of “Paradise.” The journey, Fanny Singer writes, makes for a remarkable study of color and the spectrum of human vision and experience. At this particular moment in time, writing a tribute to the women I am privileged enough to work with through Permanent Collection and Green Spoon didn’t quite seem like *enough*. We are living through chaotic, depressing, utterly upsetting times—discord, violence, and tragedy surround us constantly. Rights for women continue to be rolled back. It’s hard to stay optimistic. To stay grounded. So, in lieu of a supplication to support more women-led businesses, I wanted to give you one of the most nourishing recipes I can think of, from a woman who has done more for me—and for the world—than most: @alicelouisewaters (pictured in the @chezpanisse kitchen ca. 1972). Chicken soup is as old as time—it has been considered a remedy for the body and spirit for just as long. A salve, a medicine, and maybe, just maybe, the dinner you’ll make tonight: my mother’s chicken noodle soup (in the recipe archive on the @permanentcollection site). Happy International Women’s Day. 🕊️🤍
