Let’s talk about unincorporated areas and what it means for open spaces. Fallbrook is a census-designated place (CDP), meaning it's recognized by the U.S. Census Bureau as a populated area but doesn't have its own municipal government. That means that services in Fallbrook come from nonprofits, committees and community service districts. (For example, fire protection is provided by North County Fire Protection District.) Our community is responsible for caring for and growing our open spaces and preserves. Nonprofits or conservancies, like Fallbrook Land Conservancy, bring in private donations, foundation grants, or partnerships to support local projects, trails, or community needs. FLC does not receive ongoing budget support from state or federal legislature. We rely on our community donations, grants and fundraising to help us keep our preserves growing. Let’s break it down by examples: If you pledge a $5 a month donation, we can purchase a new California Milkweed every month to help grow our Appleton Preserve. If you pledge a $15 a month donation, our Save Our Forest committee can purchase a new shovel for volunteers on Wednesdays. If you pledge a $50 monthly recurring, we can commit to new signage for our trailheads. If you pledge a $100 monthly donation, we can hire landscaping and preserve managers to help maintain our Los Jilgueros walkways and wetlands. Your donation helps the Fallbrook Land Conservancy protect open space, restore native habitats, and keep our wild places thriving—for today and for future generations. From $10 to $1000, any donation helps us preserve Fallbrook. #FallbrookLand #DonationsNeeded #Membership #UnincorporatedSanDiego

We’re excited to partner with Fallbrook Land Conservancy to launch a brand-new Senior Walking Group! 🌿👟 FLC will be onsite during tomorrow’s (2/25) Senior Lunch to share more about their organization and what you can expect from the walking group. Our first walk kicks off on March 10 at 10:00 AM at Dinwiddie Preserve. It’s a wonderful opportunity to enjoy the outdoors, connect with others, and stay active together. Stop by tomorrow to learn more and add your name to the interest list — we’d love to have you join us!

Look at the productivity of a yellow-faced bumblebee! This one is visiting Penstemon spectabilis flowers at Appleton Preserve in the SOF EE habitat restoration area. These bees are particularly essential for pollinating greenhouse tomatoes, peppers, and berries. Rather than choosing the most abundant flowers, these bees prefer to travel to areas with a wider variety of floral species to increase their nutrient intake. Makes us feel a little lazy! #fallbrookland #yellowfacedbumblebee #pollinators #buzzpollination

It’s time for a good before and after update! Check out Appleton Preserve, wonderfully filling in with the native plants planted by 5th graders. Our Native Plant Restoration Team has been watering the youngest native plants at Appleton and found lots of new growth. Swipe to see last years photos! What a difference a year makes! Just imagine, if you planted your yard this year you could see growth like this in no time 😉 #CaliforniaNativePlants #NativePlants #Conservation #Wildflowers #Pollinators

May is a busy month for everyone but we’re making it fun! This weekend we have TWO events on the calendar. Saturday evening (7-9:30pm) we have a FREE family event at William H Frazier elementary school. Join us for our Star Party where we’ll chat with a local astronomer, learn about bats as pollinators, and take a look through telescopes to see the stars! On Sunday (4-7pm) we have our Wine & Wildflowers event among the flowers at our Sculpture Garden at Palomares house. This 21+ ticketed event is sponsored by Adobe Hill, Fallbrook Winery, Vineyard 1924 and Myrtle Creek Winery. This is a wonderful way to spend time together enjoying our local wines. We have something for everyone! Which event are you most excited for?

Did you know? California Poppies and Tree Poppies may look similar at first glance, but they’re actually very different plants! Both of these beautiful flowers are blooming at our Sculpture Garden and both of these photos were taken by Vera Lynn, an 11 year old, during our craft workshop! Here's a helpful guide to tell them apart: 🧡 California Poppy (Eschscholzia californica) California’s official state flower Bright orange blooms that open in the sun Soft, fern-like foliage Low-growing wildflower that spreads easily in fields and gardens Loved by pollinators and thrives in dry conditions 💛 Island Bush Poppy (Dendromecon harfordii) A tall native shrub, not a true poppy flower field plant Features yellow poppy-like blooms Woody stems and blue-green leaves Can grow several feet tall and thrives on hillsides and chaparral slopes Excellent for native landscaping and habitat gardens Both are beautiful California natives that support local ecosystems and bring vibrant color to our landscapes! Have you spotted either of these blooming lately? #CaliforniaNativePlants #CaliforniaPoppy #TreePoppy #NativePlants #Pollinators #Conservation #NatureEducation #Wildflowers

Did you know there's a difference between spring flowers and summer blooms? Spring bloomers (like California poppy, tulips, and daffodils) are all about that first burst of color after winter. Summer bloomers (like sunflowers and zinnias) take over once the heat kicks in. Fortunately for us here in Fallbrook, we actually get a nice overlap... spring wildflowers fade just as summer garden flowers start taking off. These beauties are all blooming at Horse Creek Ridge! How many of these blooms can you name? #springflowers #horsecreekridgepreserve #nativeplants #fallbrookland
