Wow! You ever go through a wild workplace trauma and get an award out of it? (They’re fixing the spelling on the plaque they tell me) Honored to be recognized by the Rhode Island Labor History Society, @pvdcitycouncil , and Secretary of State @gregg.amore . Especially honored to be recognized alongside my fellow trailblazer Nubia Gomez. Huge gratitude to my YPI union siblings, 1199 SEIU organizers @marymurphywalsh , Lu Dunker, Jesse Martin, and my wife @willowthebloody Here’s some of the words I said in a room of hundreds of labor organizers and union leaders: 📢 Youth Pride Inc was my first nonprofit job and I went in bright eyed and bushy tailed, despite warnings from friends about the nature of the nonprofit industrial complex (if you know, you know). Youth Pride Inc is a space that offers affirmation, support, and community to LGBTQ+ youth. When workplace safety and treatment took a nosedive, my coworkers and I were heartbroken, because we so deeply believed in the work we were doing there. There are a lot of incredible labor organizers here in RI, but I believe we were chosen for this award because organizing a union at a nonprofit is unusual. Another reason might be the demographics of our organizing team. I’m proud to say our union was started by a diverse group of 100% queer and predominantly trans twenty somethings with limited means. The RILHS choosing to honor this union is meaningful especially today when queer and trans rights are under attack in the united states. Organizations that openly work in support of queer people are seeing the sweeping elimination of their federal funding. It’s risky to stand up today in support of lgbtq inclusion. Unions exist to redistribute power to those the system endeavors to disenfranchise. Those of us who experience disenfranchisement in the rest of our lives beyond the workplace are even better prepared to fight in solidarity for fair treatment. Today’s award is a historic step in naming that: here in RI, the labor movement sees the value of lgbtq organizers. Thank you for this recognition, and for standing up and saying with us: the future of the labor movement is queer and radically inclusive.

In 2020 I decided I wanted to pivot my career path and do something that provided direct support for my community. I applied and got into the masters of social work program at Rhode Island College in 2022. Becoming a clinical social worker has been a tough 3 year journey. Let’s recap: TLDR: experienced rampant ableism, became ill and further disabled, bought a house, suffered a concussion, started a union, got constructively fired for it, won a contract with the union for the remaining and future organization’s employees, settled an NLRB lawsuit, won a prestigious internship stipend, got pregnant while in my jam-packed final year, and graduated with a 3.9 GPA. I’m due to give birth in July, and will be starting my private therapy practice after parental leave. Detailed recap in comments!

A quick makeup tutorial 💫 in support of the @seiu1199_ne workers at @womenandinfantshospital who have a strike vote coming up this week and are fighting for a contract that supports them with fair labor practices, appropriate benefits, and wages that reflect the sacrifices they make to dedicate unwavering care to their patients. Wear purple in your clothing and makeup to support these tireless union siblings in solidarity! 💜💜

Happy to share that I’m beginning my work offering clinical therapy this year through my internship at Kira Keenan’s private practice. Under Kira’s expert supervision I will be able to offer therapy to individuals and people in relationships of all kinds at an accessible, sliding scale rate including some no-cost options. Therapy is something everyone deserves access to and I am grateful to use this period of my schooling before I am licensed to make it accessible to folks who may not have access to it otherwise. My main focus will be on sex and relationship therapy, but I will not be limiting my work with clients to those subjects exclusively. Beyond this update, I’m not planning to utilize my instagram platform to find clients as it is more of a personal page at this point. If anyone is interested in learning more about my therapy work, or setting up an intake, they can do so through my website, sybedrick.com (linked in my profile) Stay tuned for updates on community offerings I have in the works for this year!
