Lauren Faigeles’s work exudes comic brilliance, a self-effacing brutality buttressed by searing wit. Language – iconographic and depictive – punctuates ebullient form as Faigeles riffs her way across the painting. The works here on view, all titled Lobotomy, jeer, taunt, and giggle. They’re familiar faces, our own scroll-addled visage longing to be freed from the bonds of information indenture and finally rid of a fried central processor. But so as not to overburden a smiling face, they are also that herky-jerky friend, dancing at unthinkable angles to off-kilter rhythms and reminding me that lightness of being is its own liberatory effect.
