The year of 2025 looks grim, at least astrologically. Mars finishes its retrograde as Venus and Mercury start their own in March. By July, Saturn, Neptune, Uranus and Pluto would all have dipped their toes into their next signs. From July on, we sail into a new era with no looking back. “The year is the real first year of the 21st century.” “The year will mark an unprecedented historical milestone upon the synchrony of the long cycles of those other planets.”This is what astrologers would say. The keywords are the collapses of authority, the rise of heroism, anarchy and technology for the next 10-15 years. It is by design that astrology forecasts usually turn into history lessons. What happens next has already happened before, whether it’s the last full moon in the same sign, or the last Uranus in Gemini 84 years ago. Any future moment is only an intersection of multiple pasts. Astrologers put together the forecast by slotting past events into the grammatical template of conjunction, opposition, square, etc. - much the same as what linguists characterize as a compositional act. And yet linguistics can’t fathom what gets conjured beyond the composition/equation. What then is new about the future, except a fancy new formula of the past? Astrology promises the future will be new in that it will manifest the archetypal symbolism of planets and signs in a different but accurate way - this time, Aries will mean war but not any war we knew of, while being a war we already knew could be. In a sense, sentences’ meaning have the same uncertainty until it is uttered, upon which the composition gains a surplus. The surplus lies in the regeneration of the meaning space of the constituents, ie words. The future is only new because it will rewrite what we think we know about the past, and about the astrological symbols. (continuing in comments)
