©️- The Fisher{wo}men of Praia da Mira • • Traveling back south from Cantabria in the north of Spain through Portugal, I did stop one night by a beach south of Porto. I was immediately struck by the large numbers of seagulls sitting on the beach. Sight more and more rare since seagulls have taken the habit to move more inland due to the ease of finding food in dumps, landfields and common rubbish bins 😞. But here they were just strolling among beach goers! The very early next morning the mystery was explained when I was woken up by shouting, engines noises and the loud squawking sound of seagulls. Fisher{wo}men were pulling back to shore the nets. It was quite a romantic scenery (at least it was and it is for me). An old activity that in this part of Portugal it is still practiced in an almost original way. Those faces, those hands of those men and women that told stories of the sea of many many years before. The weathering of the skin affected by the long exposed life to sea salt and sun. It was a beautiful experience to be able to document one day in the life of those fisher-men-and-women of Praia de Mira! The Arte Xàvega is an ancient style of fishing rooting back centuries in the Iberian peninsula now existing in only few places on the Portuguese coast. A wooden boat leave the shore (now with an engine) sailing to sea for a km or so dragging a big circular net similar to a sack. After a few hours the two extremities of the net are then pulled ashore by tractors, where in the past bulls and cows were used. Then the fish is collected by the local fishermen and sold to the public and local businesses. The made up “fisher{wo}men” in the title wants to give respect and honour also to the women that for centuries have taken part in the activities of the sea. Women always had and have a fundamental role in the rural and industrial fishing business around the world. From being in the first line free diving to collect molluscs like in Korea, for example - to being more in the background raising children while men were at sea. Although, we always refer to fisherMEN, hence why here I wanted a more inclusive word for this series! 🙏🏻 #centrodeportugal
