A few months ago, within the context of
@recstores festival in Igualada, I got invited by
@leather_cluster_barcelona to propose some artistic installations exploring leather as a material that wakes up our senses.
The 💡 idea was "the leather essence," human figure-size installations, each one focusing on our senses: smell, touch, sight,taste, and sound. I drafted some quick sketches for each of the sculptures, thinking of different interactions, textures, and techniques! As time was not on our side, I decided to use
@stability.ai to make quick renders of my ideas, and I was blown away by the results.
Our challenge was to fabricate those renders! With
@miguel_miwa.studio as a leader and
@tmdc.es as the production space, we made a team
@julijakaras for the leather moulding and
@seeyou.leather for the sewing!
All the designs were made in Rhinoceros with grasshopper, producing ready to cut files both for the wooden waffle structure and for the leather patterns.
In a month, we installed 3 sculptures:
The sight: a hanging illuminated eye 👁 shaped with controlable leds
The smell: a perforated scented smoke emitting sculpture
The touch: A leather moulded forest of leaves
Using AI rendering and later creating the real fabrication was a delight of a process! It was so easy to communicate with the client about what we were imagining.
