May 2026 • © Fabio Zayed • Bernard Plasse is a central figure in Marseille's cultural and artistic scene, known primarily for his work as a gallery owner, art critic, journalist, and visual artist. In December 1990 he founded the Galerie du Tableau, the oldest contemporary art exhibition space still operating in Marseille. Over the years the space and cultural activity led by Bernard Plasse have offered a showcase of free expression and meeting for thousands of artists both French and international. Bernard Plasse's illustrated poetry production represents the beating heart of his conceptual artistic research, focused on the fusion of the written word, visual art and editorial sharing, on the constant dialogue between writers, poets, and painters, uniting poetic texts with lithographs and original graphic works. Many of his historical editions were published out of print in the form of interchangeable chip folders, unbound booklets, or loose sheets, designed to undermine the classical concept of the book and emphasize the temporal and performative value of art. In his brief reflections, born during his 35 years as director of the gallery, Bernard Plasse describes the exhibition not as a fixed object to be contemplated, but as a transitory action, stating that the gallery itself is primarily intended to be "open to passers-by" (ouvert aux passants), where the work is merely a pretext to trigger a change or an encounter. . . . . . . . . .

Arter contemporary art center, Dolapdere neighborhood (Istanbul 2026) • © Fabio Zayed • The Arter contemporary art center opened its new headquarters in the working-class neighborhood of Dolapdere in 2019. In stark contrast to the surrounding urban fabric of crumbling houses and informal buildings stacked along the hillsides, small factories, and scrap dealers, Arter is considered a hub for independent and non-aligned culture in a national landscape marked by shrinking spaces for freedom of expression. Dolapdere boasts a centuries-old history of working-class multiculturalism. In the 19th century, the neighborhood was a mosaic of ethnicities and religions: muslim turks, catholic armenians, orthodox greeks, and european levantines coexisted, creating a diverse and dynamic social fabric. However, the 20th century upended this balance, republican-era policies and massive waves of immigration redefined the area's demographics. The 1980s in particular saw the arrival of a large kurdish population fleeing conflict in southeastern Turkey, followed by african and, more recently, syrian refugees. Today, Dolapdere is a neighborhood of resistance and resilience. Alongside the historic Roma community and the remaining armenian and greek residents, low-income kurdish and turkish families rely on informal support networks to survive precarious housing conditions and limited access to essential services. Despite these challenges, daily life is punctuated by local markets and a strong sense of community. However, the neighborhood's face is changing rapidly. Since the early 2010s, the arrival of art galleries, creative studios, and the establishment of Bilgi University have triggered a process of gentrification. While these changes have led to improved infrastructure and a new cultural vibrancy, they also threaten Dolapdere's social identity.
