Ah Chai, the youngest of the 3 siblings in his family. He won’t settle for easy answer for difficult questions. He joins street protest hoping to inspire change to the corruption of power. Despite his best efforts, he can’t inspire an inch of change within his family. He feels unheard… But not unheard of.
I am not as brave as Ah Chai in real life. I am a big time people pleaser. Sometimes I bend my own values, out of fear of losing out on opportunity, out of fear that I won’t be accepted, out of fear that I can’t make it out there. But each time I bend, I would drown in enormous shame, like I have betrayed myself, like there’s something wrong with me. And these shames have violent and destructive consequences to my being and especially to people close to me.
Some say we learnt how to people please in childhood. I can easily blame my parents for not showing me a fearless way of life. But then they too can blame their parents, and their parents on their parents… When and how did all these fear and shame begun?
The film offers me a passage to examine deep within myself, and to explore the collective fear that we unintentionally pass on down from generation to generation. The generation before us were going through historical circumstances, and they were desperate and would do anything just to survive.
I guess to break free from this generational spell, the way is to live authentically. We may lose out on opportunity when we don’t bend, we may not be accepted by some when we don’t please. But maybe this way we can be free of fear and shame. We can be whole again. Our heart can open once again. And to accept fully the gift that we called life.
Great film inspires. And an honest film can heal. My soul is forever indebted film director Lau Kek Huat for sharing this journey with such an open heart, with so much warmth and care, and with such selfless love for the community.
