Doha @artbasel this week was a culmination of two decades of strategic cultural investment, global partnerships, institutional capacity-building, and an increasingly confident local art scene. This moment both celebrates what’s been built and poses exciting questions about how Qatari artists, institutions, and markets will shape the next chapter of contemporary art: here, regionally, and on the world stage.

تواصل فاطمة محمد تحقيقاتها في الثقافة البترولية والاستعمار النفطي في معرضها الفردي “العالم البترولي”. تستند أعمالها إلى بحث أرشيفي شامل، يشمل وثائق شخصية ورسمية، حيث تتأمل فاطمة في الجوانب الاجتماعية والسياسية لسياسات النفط، مع تركيز خاص على أحداث السبعينيات وأزمة النفط في عام 1973. في هذه اللوحة، تصور فاطمة كشافًا صغيرًا يقف في حقول النفط، يتساءل إن كان عليه البقاء لحماية الموارد أو الرحيل ببساطة، مما يدعو المشاهدين للتفكير في هذا السؤال بأنفسهم.

Fatima Mohammed continues her inquiry into Petroculture and Petro-colonialism in her solo exhibition ‘It’s a Petro World’. Drawing from an extensive archival research involving both personal and official archives, Fatima reflects on the social and political dimensions of petroleum politics, particularly examining the events of the 1970s and the 1973 Oil Crisis. In this painting Fatima depicts a boy scout in the oil fields debating whether he should stay and protect the resources or just simply walk away, urging the viewers to pose this question to themselves.
Today is the last day to view her ongoing solo show—we hope to see you at the gallery from 3-9pm.

Fatima Mohammed’s painting ‘Speak Now or Forever Hold Your Peace’ references the 1973 Oil Crisis. In October 1973, the Organisation of Arab Petroleum Exporting Countries (OAPEC) announced a total oil embargo against the countries who had supported Israel during the 1973 Yom Kippur War. Initially, the targeted countries were Canada, Japan, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, and the United States, but the list was later expanded to also include Portugal, Rhodesia, and South Africa.
Petroculture and particularly Petro-colonialism are recurrent topics in Fatima’s artistic practice. In this new body of work presented at Wusum Gallery, she reflects on the social and political dimensions of petroleum politics, examining the underpinnings of the 1973 oil crisis drawing from her extensive archival research involving both personal and official archives.

في عملها الفني “عذراً، لا يوجد وقود” (2024)، تعيد فاطمة محمد إحياء ذكرى أزمة النفط عام 1973. فقد أثار قرار الولايات المتحدة بتزويد إسرائيل (فلسطين المحتلة) بالأسلحة خلال حرب يوم الغفران استياء الوفد العربي في منظمة أوبك، مما دفعهم إلى فرض حظر على تصدير النفط إلى الولايات المتحدة وكندا والمملكة المتحدة واليابان وهولندا.
تُعد الثقافة البترولية والاستعمار النفطي من المواضيع المركزية في مسيرة فاطمة الفنية. وفي هذا العمل الجديد الذي يعرض حالياً في رواق وسوم، تتناول فاطمة الأبعاد الاجتماعية والسياسية لسياسات النفط، مستعرضة جذور أزمة النفط عام 1973 عبر دراسة أرشيفية مُعمقة، تستند فيها إلى مصادر
شخصية ورسمية.
Fatima Mohammed’s Sorry No Gas (2024) references the 1973 Oil Crisis. The American decision to supply Israel with arms during the Yom-Kippur War angered the Arab delegation of OPEC. The delegation responded with an embargo of oil sales to the US, Canada, the UK, Japan and the Netherlands.

We are thrilled to invite you to Fatima Mohammed’s first solo show at Wusum Gallery. ‘It’s a Petro World’ opens on 7 August 2024 at 6pm. In this exhibition, Fatima continues her inquiry into Petroculture and Petro-colonialism. The visitors are guided by her character ‘3naj’, a part Arab and part American bald eagle, examining the underpinnings of an energy crisis.
