The Beautiful Man Who Refused Too Much. There’s something about barakah (blessing) here too. He likely experiences more blessing in his modest earnings than many do in their abundance, precisely because he’s aligned with what feels right rather than what’s possible to take. His conscience is clear, his sleep is sound, and his interactions leave so many people uplifted rather than exploited.

On Companionship and Elevation. It’s easy to drift into environments and relationships that don’t elevate us, simply because they’re comfortable or convenient. Encounters like this are reminders to actively curate who we spend time with. Not out of elitism, but out of responsibility to who we’re becoming. The question his life poses: what am I willing to subtract to reclaim my own presence? Because presence isn’t something you add through techniques or hacks. It’s what remains when you remove the things that fragment you. يا حي يا قيوم برحمتك أستغيث، أصلح لي شأني كله، ولا تكلني إلى نفسي طرفة عين.

You look at others, but do you really see them? Some reflections while reading David Brooks’ book, How to Know A Person: The Art of Seeing Others Deeply and Being Deeply Seen.

“The desire for a more positive experience is itself a negative experience. And the acceptance of one’s negative experience is itself a positive experience.” — Mark Manson wrote in this book, “The Subtle Art of Not Giving a ****”. These words from 2016 echo what Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said 1400 years ago: “Appreciate whatever God bestows upon you and you will be the richest of people.”, “Your fear of impoverishment positions you in a state of impoverishment.” “You expecting a catastrophe is a bigger catastrophe.” Alan Watts called this the “backwards law”: the more you chase feeling better, the less satisfied you become - because pursuing something reinforces that you lack it. The more desperately you want to be rich, the poorer you feel. The more desperately you want to be desired, the uglier you see yourself. The more desperately you want to be loved, the lonelier you become. This isn’t about abandoning ambition. It’s about becoming a grateful soul. The struggle is holding both gratitude and aspiration at once. Gratitude shouldn’t be a fleeting emotion it should be a principle. As Warren Buffett says, “If principles can become dated, they are not principles.” May we all be grateful and remain grateful. May we all aspire and inspire.

Spent over 2 hours, catching up with one of the most beautiful, gentle souls out there @alexanderleveringkern - talking about mercy, kindness, hospitality, leading with heart, helping those in need, and building teams grounded in care. On our way out, we were faced with a test that showed Alex truly walks the talk: a low-income Hispanic immigrant delivery driver had an accident. The police wanted to tow his scooter because it didn’t have a license plate, which could have affected his livelihood. Before the driver went to the hospital, Alex gave him some money, stayed with him over an hour in the street, and called his wife on the phone to help translate while advocating to the police to ensure he stayed safe and secure. Rare breed in this age 💙🙏🏼

There comes a point where pain no longer deserves center stage. A moment when the heart turns from what was lost toward what can still be found in peace and quiet renewal. Yes, there has been hurt and questions without answers, but they no longer define the path. What happened shaped the soul so strength could be understood not as resistance but as direction. Energy belongs to what nourishes the spirit. The more it’s given to what truly matters, the softer the noise becomes and the clearer the vision feels. Closure doesn’t come from others. It’s created through acceptance. Peace is built through stillness. Meaning is found in giving and becoming. In the end, the story isn’t about who left or stayed, but about how the heart chooses to heal and continue. يا حي يا قيوم، برحمتك أستغيث، أصلح لي شأني كله، ولا تكلني إلى نفسي طرفة عين.

I’ve recently been thinking about istiqāmah - استقامة, steadfastness. There’s something profoundly human about it. It’s not a call to be strong but to be straight, to live in alignment with truth without swerving left or right. When the Qur’an says “فَاسْتَقِمْ كَمَا أُمِرْتَ” — “Be steadfast as you were commanded,” it reminds me that steadfastness isn’t about willpower. It’s about living in order, where your body, heart, and soul all face the same direction. That is the ultimate strength. I’ve noticed that when I lose that alignment, when my posture, focus, or actions drift, my inner state does too. But when I stand upright, in prayer or in purpose, something inside of me straightens. Istiqāmah is harmony between body and soul.To be steadfast is to walk a straight path, honest, balanced, and true to the One who commands it. May The Merciful One guide us to steadfastness. Ameen.
