Let’s get right to the point: ‘My Point eXAKtly,’ the first Jacob Jolliff penned tune for EZRA, is out today! Pianist Xak Bjerken may not be on Instagram, but he’s all over this one with his baroque-style counterpoint. As Xak explains, "Jacob wrote the tune, and I wrote the countersubject, like a two-part Bach invention…or that was what I was thinking. It’s been a week since the release of ‘Milk on Tap,’ the first single from EZRA’s new album Whippersnap. This one is composed by Max, and the title was inspired by Max’s frequent trips to the Oberlin College dining hall, where he would sneak in an empty milk bottle to fill from the “tap” there. Now that he’s a graduate, he has to buy milk from the grocery store, like a normal person.

Founded by award-winning composer and multi-instrumentalist Jesse Jones, EZRA’s core ensemble is composed of acoustic music superstar Jacob Jolliff (mandolin), Max Allard (banjo), Craig Butterfield (double bass) and Jones (guitar). For Whippersnap, EZRA welcomes back pianist Xak Bjerken, whose contributions to Whippersnap include sultry solos on tunes like ‘Noname’ and ‘Pomaria’ (written by Jones and Butterfield respectively), rowdy rodeo rhythms in Allard’s ‘Taxiway Tossup,’ baroque-style counterpoint in Jolliff’s ‘My Point eXAKtly,’ and even a touch of the avant-garde with wild prepared piano sounds on the out-there Jones tune, ‘Addatif.’

EZRA clearly has a lot to say, and they’re getting better and better at saying it. Froggy’s Demise may be their best work yet. They have developed a language and a rhythm as a band, and with each album, they are more and more comfortable challenging each other musically. They also just continue to have a really good time together.
With Froggy’s Demise, EZRA presents ten widely varied compositions in the manner of contemporary chamber music, but each with heavy doses of jazz- and roots-based improvisation. Get ready for some spiky synchronized jabs, some supersonic triplets, some asymmetrical metric turns, some loping rhythms, some poignant sensitivity, and some real-nerdy harmonic shifts, all grounded by a playful, folky tunefulness.
