From Naples to New York, Alberto “Polo” Cretara has carried hip-hop as a language of resistance, memory, and direction.
As the frontman of La Famiglia, one of the first groups to bring hip-hop in Neapolitan dialect to the Italian national market, Polo helped open a path that later artists would continue to expand. In the 1990s, choosing Neapolitan was not just an artistic decision. It was also a way to answer a country that often looked at the South through prejudice.
In this conversation, Polo looks back at the origins of his relationship with hip-hop, from early trips to England and France to his first journey to New York at eighteen. He speaks about Naples, anger, dignity, the cultural link between two port cities, and the role of music when everything else seems harder to read.
For him, hip-hop remains a culture built on challenge, but also on peace, unity, and the possibility of finding a way out.
At 54, back in the studio with La Famiglia, Polo does not describe the past as nostalgia. He sees it as something still active: a message that can be carried forward, if people are willing to listen beyond the algorithm.
