Better late than neverâIHSA State, still hitting just as hard.
From 1A to 3A, the stage was set. Different paths, same goal. The energy, the emotion, the moments⊠all of it earned.

Burner Of The Year: Steven Balboni - Farson Tech: Kinda a sad year this year as far as consistent burner accounts went. Yes, we had plenty of trolling but just a total lack of depth or consistency. The real estate burners are always going to burn, but Steven finally stepped up as king troll this season. He mostly was weighing in on Hersey stuff but Balboni was someone who we could count on to add some inappropriate perspective when we needed it. We asked Top Dawg to introduce Balboni to pass the proverbial torch from burner to burner. Not completely unexpectedly, neither burner was able to get their videos in one time. So, congrats to Steven Balboni on winning âBurner Of The Yearâ and good luck with the donkey breeding.
Upset Of The Year: Ethan Sonne - Marist: Sonne had probably the best finals match of 3A as he upset stud Justin Wardlow from Lockport. Sadly for Wardlow, he now holds the record for being the only 4x runner-up in IHSA history and Sonne is to blame for that. He caught Wardlow on his back during a scramble in the 1st and Wardlow was close, but was never able to actually get those points back. Sonne is Fargo champ and now state champ and he is dispelling said rumors he may be transferring. He might be the first wrestler in history that won state on Saturday and then served a detention on Monday (IYKYK). Congrats to Ethan Sonne on winning âUpset Of The Yearâ and please no more wig pics in the DMs. They get us both in trouble.
All-Classes Wrestler Of The Year: Dom Munaretto - STC East: Munaretto had one of the most successful careers in IHSA history. He was a 2x Ironman champ, 3x State Champ, 2x World champ in freestyle, and won the Cheesehead an impressive 4 times. He had one single loss in the state of Illinois (Garcia sophomore year) and he was an absolute wrecking ball throughout his career as far as bonus points go. He is ranked #3 in the nation at 120, #19 on the P4P list, and he will be going to Ohio State next year to continue the STCE to OSU pipeline. Congrats to Dom Munaretto on his Exposie for âAll-Classes Wrestler Of The Yearâ and sorry for bringing up the Garcia match.
3A Wrestler Of The Year: Nicholas Garcia - Marmion: Garcia blew up what seems like overnight between his freshman and sophomore seasons. Garcia is now a 3x state champion and his first might be the most memorable after upsetting superstar Dom Munaretto. Garcia took 3rd this year at Ironman after losing in OT to champ and national stud Grey Burnett. He ends his career ranked as the #2 132 in the nation and was a huge driving force in the back-to-back state championships Marmion has collected. Garcia will be joining Medlin at U of I and he is another wrestler we are anticipating jumping right into the lineup and being successful. Congrats to Nicholas Garcia on his Exposie for â3A Wrestler Of The Yearâ and nice work on getting the whole crew in on the video. That was cute.
2A Wrestler Of The Year: Wyatt Medlin - Washington: Medlin had one of the most impressive careers in IHSA history and finishes as a 3x State champion, 3x Ironman placer, and 1x Ironman champ. He beat our 2A WOTY from last year Justus Heeg in the finals of the Ironman this year 1-0 and basically teched everyone and their mom since that match. He is going to Illinois next year and weâre hoping he is going to have Kannon Webster-like success right away for the Illini. He is an absolute dude as he finishes ranked #3 nationally and his competition is not going to miss him in the slightest. Congrats to Wyatt Medlin on his Exposie for â2A Wrestler Of The Yearâ and we forgive you for not staying at 157 to wrestle Heeg again at State.
1A Wrestler Of The Year: Pierre Walton - Althoff Catholic: Pierre came storming onto the scene last year with his state run and championship in 2A last year for East St. Louis. After they got the year wrong on his road sign, he decided to transfer to Althoff and began his 1a domination of 165. His lone loss was an out-of-state one in OT and as he mentioned in his post-match interview, he basically pissed excellence all year. We didnât love the two piece singlet in the finals but when youâre that dominant we guess you can wear whatever you want. Congrats to Pierre Walton from Althoff on his Exposie for â1A Wrestler Of The Yearâ and thanks for the WWE sketch acceptance. That was ummmm something.
