âThe truth unquestionably is, that the only path to a subversion of the republican system of the Country is by flattering the prejudices of the people, and exciting their jealousies and apprehensions, to throw affairs into confusion, and bring on civil commotion.
Tired at length of anarchy, or want of government, they may take shelter in the arms of monarchy for repose and security.
When a man unprincipled in private life desperate in his fortune, bold in his temper, possessed of considerable talents, having the advantage of military habitsâdespotic in his ordinary demeanourâknown to have scoffed in private at the principles of libertyâwhen such a man is seen to mount the hobby horse of popularityâto join in the cry of danger to libertyâto take every opportunity of embarrassing the General Government & bringing it under suspicionâto flatter and fall in with all the non sense of the zealots of the dayâIt may justly be suspected that his object is to throw things into confusion that he may âride the storm and direct the whirlwind.ââ

ââDoes a Commonwealth suffer more by hypocritical pretenders of religion or by the openly profane?â
âA publick Hypocrite every day deceives his betters, and makes them the Ignorant Trumpeters of his supposed Godliness: They take him for a Saint, and pass him for one, without considering that they are (as it were) the Instruments of publick Mischief out of Conscience, and ruin their Country for Godâs sake.â
đ Benjamin Franklin letter July 23, 1722 under his pen name Silence Dogood
đşđ¸ âDisorders and miseries gradually incline the minds of men to seek security and repose in the absolute power of an individual.
Sooner or later the chief of that prevailing faction, more able or more fortunate than his competitors, turns this disposition to the purposes of his own elevation, on the ruins of public liberty.
A wise people should discourage and restrain this spirit. For a party serves always to distract the public councils and enfeeble the public administration. It agitates the community with ill-founded jealousies and false alarms. It kindles the animosity of one party against another and foments riots and insurrection. It opens the door to foreign influence and corruption, which finds a facilitated access to the government itself through the channels of party passions.â

1995 in the house. Ex-Southern Pacific No.333, now UP No.6379 with a blade train.
My understanding, that as of 2026, it is 1 of the last 4 survivors of the era. Seeing it was a complete accident and fun to chase.

đĽ Ernst Rohm. Leader of the SA police force and was enormously instrumental in Hitlerâs rise to power and then boop. Assassinated by his own party.
Once in power, Hitler & the Nazi Party had Rohm and several others murdered late June-July 1934. The event is known as the ânight of the long knives.â Nazis assassinating Nazis and then some.
Rohm had started to do his own thinking. He was also homosexual. Neither one of those things fit into the Nazi master plan. As soon as they had seized control of Germany, the next phase was to shrink the government, consolidate power and have absolute control of everything.
ââ
The SAâs assistance with getting Hitler elected is something to study. They deliberately marched into city centers where there were higher amounts of political opposition; the goal being to stir emotions and incite violence; the propaganda said they were there to maintain order.
The brownshirts were also physically present at voting stations with the goal of intimidating minority groups such as foreigners, Jews and again, people of political opposition. The propaganda said they were there to maintain the integrity of the voting process.
Rohm was a veteran of WW1 and was well connected to military circles, weapons and had access to military funds which were diverted into Hitlerâs campaigning and rallies. Hitler used him, then dumped him. Thugs doing thug things
*This is hardly a summary
đĽ The assassin was German, but that was kept hush hush. The Gestapo was embarrassed that one guy had gotten through their intelligence. They wasted no time covering this up and spinning this into some much-needed propaganda.
đŹđ§ They blamed the British for this one. They even plucked a couple of Brits out of Holland and named them as the conspirators. The Nazis now had more juice to war things up with Britain. They did this with Czechoslovakia; they did it with Poland. They manufactured a threat, told the German people they werenât safe, then moved forward with war plans and their national âcleansingâ efforts.
đŁ This event was the BĂźrgerbräukeller bombingâan assassination attempt on Hitler and other high-ranking Nazis carried out on the night of November 8, 1939.
A German carpenter, Johann Georg Elser, acted alone in this detailed and precise attempt. He missed killing Hitler by 13 minutes. 8 other Nazis were killed, and dozens more were injured.
This was just one more event, of many, where Hitler believes he is some sort of sole âchosen oneâ that will save and lead Germany into its future greatness.
The Horst Wessel effect. Martyrdom, victimhood and propaganda as usual. Sometimes Nazis were assassinated by the opposition. Sometimes Nazis assassinated other Nazis. There are several cases to study.
No matter the circumstance, Joseph Goebbels never missed an opportunity to drum up a frenzy and paint the Nazi Party as being under attack or victims. It was a chance to say⌠those people over there are violent and evil, weâre the good guys, we love Germany, no one is as patriotic as we are, weâre gonna save you, weâre gonna cleanse and save our country. Yadda yadda yadda
Enter the Horst Wessel Story. A German Nazi who was shot by a German communist.
đ The Nazis named Wessel a martyr and made him famous.
Of course Hitler could have cared less about the guy. No one could outshine Hitler! Hitler did manage to briefly mention Wessel during some speeches. Everything else was handled by Goebbels.
đ There were Wessel shirts, posters, banners and pins. Merch is important. Ya gotta have merch.
đđş The Horst Wessel song became the official Nazi anthem. Every cult needs something to dance to.
đŤ Buildings. Buildings need names. Especially Nazi Youth schools. Shape those young minds!
đ˘ They named a boat after him, the SSS Horst Wessel. (Later on, the USA straight up takes this ship and renames it the USCG Eagle đ We still have it and we still use it)
đĽ They made a patriotic hero film based on Wessel. âHans Westmar.â Gotta keep the masses entertained.
đŁď¸ And oh yes, a street. Every martyr needs a street. âHorst Wessel Stabeâ was indeed a thing.
That was 1930s Germany for ya. Those fools.
Phew⌠itâs a good thing that we are wise, bigly educated, and knowledgeable about the past. Otherwise this might all happen again đĽ´
⢠âHorst Wessel did a great deal more for the Nazi image as a dead pimp than he had ever done as a live Party member.â
