There was a period in my life when I began to understand that a life can end long before anything outwardly changes.
I would move through familiar places with the feeling that I no longer fully existed inside them.
Everything appeared intact.
But something essential had already come undone.
At the time, I thought I was searching for a different place.
Looking back, I think I was searching for a different relationship to myself.
Not long after, I moved to Seattle.
I did not yet understand how certain landscapes enter a life precisely when something within us is ready to change.
There are places I have lived that felt like they were teaching me something I couldn’t yet understand.
At the time, it often felt disorienting.
Only later did those periods begin to make sense—
not as isolated experiences,
but as part of a larger pattern.
It has taken years to recognize how these cycles move.
And how differently a life can be lived once you begin to see them.
Not every transition announces itself. Some quietly remove your footing.
A place you once felt certain in begins to feel unstable.
The rhythm of your life continues—but something in it has shifted.
You may not have words to label it.
There’s nothing clear to explain.
Only a knowing that something has already changed.
I’ve come to recognize these moments differently over time.
Some transitions don’t arrive as events.
They alter your orientation entirely.
I imagined many things for my life that never happened. I have experienced many things in my life that I would have never imagined.
I never imagined my life taking me to a place such as this. I never imagined my life on a Greek island, or any island for that matter, now I have lived on two— one in the Norwegian Sea and one in the Aegean sea.
All of it random?
No, all of it synchronistic.

Tinos Island
Cyclades, Greece #cycladesislands #spiritualretreat
Life will break you. Nobody can protect you from that, and being alone won’t either, for solitude will also break you with its yearning. You have to love. You have to feel. It is the reason you are here on earth. You have to risk your heart. You are here to be swallowed up. And when it happens that you are broken, or betrayed, or left, or hurt, or death brushes too near, let yourself sit by an apple tree and listen to the apples falling all around you in heaps, wasting their sweetness. Tell yourself that you tasted as many as you could.
