Call me Nori. ✨
Gender has always felt like a very restricting concept and for the longest time I didn't know how to navigate it or how to exist within it. Over the past few years I finally embraced the fact that I don't have to. Although this has been a deeply personal process for me, I wanted to share my truth to help encourage and empower other people that are going through a similar journey. I've been extremely fortunate to have had so much support on my journey (eternal love to my friends, lovers, J-Baby and Kumpula queer paradise ♥️), but that's not the case for everyone and that's why I feel it's vital that we extend that same love and compassion to others within and outside our communities.
After years of telling myself gender doesn't matter while still placing myself and allowing others to place me in claustrophobic gender roles, I had an important realisation. To shatter the perceptions we have of gender, we have to actively oppose the patriarchal systems at play and refuse the labels society wants to place on us in the guise of convenience. Refusal also doesn't mean we owe anyone androgyny, being non-binary is being anything and everything we are.
A part of my process has been finding a new name for myself to shed the remains of my "past life" and I found myself in Nori. It has multiple meanings in different languages ranging from "seaweed" and "my light" to "a small person", but to me it symbolises a certain kind of homecoming, security and peace.
We know that the gender binary is rigid, but we also know that it is very fragile as we are capable of breaking it by stepping outside of it. And frankly, it's just very fucking boring, so I'd prefer to exist in the infinity pool sandbox of non-conformity.
