Our student, Naabil, recently spoke at the House of Lords for International Women’s Day. She discussed her work with Skin for All and her advocacy for representation in medicine and medical education. We are so proud to see the great work she has done—and continues to do—alongside her studies with us.

Ground control to major worm!   This footage shows the launch of worms into space in a specially designed pod as part of a new mission involving our researchers. The mission addresses a critical challenge in humanity’s ambitions to explore the Moon and other planets: the harmful effects of extended space travel on human health.   These worm 'astronauts' are travelling to space in miniature labs and could help provide new insights into how biological systems change in space. This information can then be used to inform how astronauts can stay fit and healthy while travelling to and from the Moon, as well as during long-term stays following NASA’s plans to build a base there.   The lab or "Petri Pod" is a revolutionary design that will provide a miniaturised ‘life support’ environment, by maintaining temperature, pressure and a trapped volume of air for organisms to breathe when exposed to the vacuum of space. The specimens receive food and water through an agar carrier.   If you loved following the Artemis mission, check out our latest mission /faculty-of-health-and-life-sciences/space-worms-scientists-launch-microscopic-crew-into-orbit-to-support-future-moon-missions/ Photo credits: NASA

From being a presenter on CBBC to climbing Mount Kilimanjaro as an expedition doctor, Dr Daniel Olaiya has had a varied career since graduating in Medicine from the University of Exeter. Five years after leaving Exeter in 2015, Daniel was presenting on the BAFTA-winning TV show ‘Operation Ouch!’ alongside twin brother Dr Raphael Olaiya. Alongside his broadcast career Daniel has developed a prominent social media presence as ‘The Fly Doctor’. This reflects his experience and expertise as a doctor in extreme and aerospace medicine; a niche area of medicine concerned with understanding what changes to physiology, psychology and performance occur at altitude and extreme environments. This type of medicine falls under the umbrella of occupational and preventative medicine – useful for aeromedical retrieval and transfer, civil aviation, mountain climbers, or deep-sea divers. A new season of Operation Ouch! has also recently aired, continuing his work in broadcast science communication to a wide national audience.

Finlay Maguire, a Cornish paramedic, is making the move from ambulance service to working as a senior doctor after starting his studies at Exeter. His time at Exeter is being supported by the Fozzard scholarship, which supports medical students who have grown up in Devon or Cornwall and who commit to a career in medicine for a minimum of five years. Finlay trained as a paramedic in London where he worked with the London Ambulance Service, before using his experience in Ukraine to help deliver ambulances and provide medical training. Finlay said: "“Things happen for a reason. The University of Exeter is where I had always wanted to study, so it feels incredibly special to finally be here. I’m absolutely loving the course so far. “The scholarship has made a huge difference. It means I don’t need to take on as much paid work during term time. I still do a small number of paramedic shifts each month, with more during the holidays, but the financial pressure has been massively reduced. “The day I received the call to say I’d been awarded the scholarship was one of the most special moments of my journey into medicine. Learning more about Connie’s legacy, and knowing it is a Cornish-based scholarship, has made it feel even more meaningful. I’m incredibly grateful for the support.” If you are looking for a scholarship to support your studies with us have a look at Exeter Scholars.
