What you’re looking at is the backside of our new Horizontal Machining Center getting hooked up at EGW. That massive looping “chain” system is actually the machine’s automatic tool magazine.
Every numbered pocket around the chain can hold a different cutting tool including endmills, drills, taps, reamers, chamfer tools, and more. The machine automatically swaps between them in seconds while running production.
It’s honestly one of the coolest parts of modern machining to see up close. There’s an incredible amount of engineering packed into systems like this to keep high-speed, high-precision manufacturing running smoothly all day long.
Right now we’re finishing up wiring, plumbing, and setup before this thing officially starts making chips.

A pile of unfinished 1911 slide stops, fresh out of the machine.
At EGW, our slide stops are machined from solid bar stock, not MIM.
Machined from solid means each part starts as one piece of steel and is cut into its final shape. The material stays continuous through the part for better strength, wear resistance, and long term reliability.
MIM parts are molded from powdered metal. Great for high volume production, but not what we choose for critical 1911 components.
These still have a few steps left, but every one of them already started as real steel.
