• Vancouver Marathon 2026. Did I get the result I wanted? On race day, not quite, but a lot of boxes got ticked. Back in 2025 when I knew I wanted to venture back into bigger racing events I was faced with the challenge of getting myself back into shape. 5 years of parenthood had taken hold of my run fitness and I found myself struggling with 10KM. I was too heavy and it just wasn’t enjoyable. It wasn’t out of reach but I needed to get things back in order, weight needed to come off and I needed to enjoy working out again. So I joined a local gym, and counted calories. By Autumn that year I was ready to start building up mileage. The goal was a marathon. 20 years after running my first. Later I added the goal of beating that time by 20minute. I needed a 3h32min. From January to May I aimed to run a minimum of 42KM a week with 2 strength session in the form of HYROX classes, I didn’t want heavy strength, I wanted strength with cardio gains. This was my biggest win by far. I reinvigorated the runner in me. The guy that could get up at 3:30am, run 25KM in the dark and cold then come back and parent + work. This happened many times over the relentless winter with my final Edmonton run still snowing and cold. St. Albert road race a few weeks before confirmed I had pace options again but I did have some question marks over my endurance. With an average weekly mileage sitting around 60KM now it felt low, maybe 30% low. This showed up on race day. Extra work was needed to deal with the 20 degree heat swing, and whilst I knew about the elevation it still worked its charm on me. I was running a very comfortable 4:50/KM for the first 25KM. I used every single water station, mouthful of electrolytes, a cup of water to drink, another dumped on the head. I tried to slow down but it just stayed at that pace. I went into race day with a lot of anxiety and it actually stayed with me for much of the race. I was expecting a lot from myself, and I have clients watching. They know I’m hustling best as I can but there’s still pressure to perform. The final bridge climb before Stanley Park was hot and long, at the end of

• I’m not really working on hiding the fact I’m in a foul mood with these conditions. When I signed up for a spring marathon I knew full well it would mean a load of winter running, a load of early morning runs. That was actually the bit I was signing up for, committing to a process and becoming a runner of substance again. I did however allow myself to imagine a reasonable expectation that we’d have at least a few weeks of decent conditions to acclimatize to warmer temperatures. No such luck. My availability to run is pretty restricted and there’s only so many times I can get up at 4am then either work all day, or solo parent after a long run. They say it darkest before dawn, and I’ve ridden this rodeo enough to know pre-race stuff rarely has is feeling how we’d like. But this is kinda off the charts for challenging. Pity party over after today, game face on from tomorrow, time to #kiitd

• Well it was a good run. Twisted ankle and that’s the end of the marathon ambitions this year.

• I had to gather some original documentation this week and in doing so I went back through old photos to remind myself of timelines. This was around the time I started Evolution Hill, 2015. I was back from traveling and had met Kayla and now had two years to pivot away from Lighting and work out what I was going to do. With 10 years or so of races and events under my belt friends and friends of friends joined in with training. This was in the middle of a housing estate, we set up circuits and blasted tunes out the car using the headlights during winter. This was always just the side hustle, the main goal was the sports massage but the two have always gone hand in hand for me and when I needed to go back to school in Canada for massage it was PT that led me towards run coaching. Now with the experience of almost 300 athletes later, In-person coaching is coming back into the fold. Indoors this time! It’s been a long journey, and we’re still going.

• The bulk of my massage business comes from active people, and one of the most important things I want my clients to know is that I can move my availability around to suit their needs. When we’re out there training we don’t know when somethings going to go wrong and the last thing I want you to see is you need to join a waiting list for a massage in a few weeks. My goal is to keep you going, not suffer or have to compromise on rehab due to availability. This is one of the busiest times of year now, benefits start to be used and typically training is ramping up, outside conditions are at their most challenging too. I always encourage booking in advance, just know that we can always move it if needed. 👍
