It happens more than you know š§
It's not hard to understand why music publications are charging $30, $100, even upwards of $1000 for coverage of an artist. With people consuming more social media over traditional media, outlets still need to cover business costs.
In the past, blogs made most of their money from advertisement placements on their site. Less people viewing articles = less value in advertisements. So, the people who want to be featured on that blog end up paying the difference through advertorials (paid placements). Makes sense!
Where things get icky is when media outlets take advantage of this trend to not only cover business costs, but also make a pretty huge profit that doesn't reflect the real value they're providing their customers (aka artists and publicists).
There's a lot to shed light on here (and trust us, we will eventually), but what artists need to know right now, is how to combat these muddy waters.
While traditional PR (interviews, reviews, roundups) are still important to maintaining strong SEO, brand awareness, and credibility for rising artists, there's a bucket of endless opportunities that you can create for FREE - it's called social media.
So, without totally saying goodbye to traditional PR, we're exploring new ways to increase brand awareness, reach people who'd actually enjoy the music, and create space for all-around career growth. Most of that comes from creative, thoughtful, and consistent content strategy.
This allows us to still leverage traditional media opportunities and stay on-the-nose of one of the most influential elements of the entertainment industry (PR), while setting no limits to the possibilities in the digital space.
Can you tell we love our jobs?
Shoutout to all the incredible, hard working music publicists out there who are facing these challenges head-on, you got this š«¶

Itās been a long time coming⦠Summer 2024 Services!
All the stuff weāre best at, just re-imagined for OUR community of artists - if youāre reading this, thatās you!
Every 6 months or so, we regroup and reflect on whatās been working and the areas we could be giving artists more lasting value.
This month, weāre unveiling release-focused packages and a one-of-a-kind branding intensive for artists who canāt afford (or just donāt need) a monthly retainer, but still want to make the $$$ they spend on PR and marketing go beyond one release.
Weāre a team of professionals who started out in those traditional agencies that overcharge and underdeliver, and we know our community sees right through those tricks - there just hasnāt been a solution that makes sense for everyone (until now).
These packages allow us to be ready when you need us AND still fight in your corner when weāre not actively working together. How?? Weāll share our secrets soon š¤«
Head to our website homepage to see the full presentation with scope of services, starting rates, and the reason weāre making this change š«¶

QB Self-Employed: Because we need to remind everyone how critical it is to track/budget your income and expenses as an artist, no matter how much youāre making, no matter the time of year. Do your eyes gloss over when you see the word āpre-saveā bc same š«
If you donāt have a substantial group of FANS (not friends/family), thereās no reason to stress about pre-saves. Even with 1000 fans, we wouldnāt encourage you to lose sleep over it.
āBut what about Spotify editorials? Wonāt I miss out on catching their attention?ā
There are about 20 other things you should be more worried about if your goal is to land editorial playlists.
Two years ago today, we mightāve advised differently. But itās 2024 and weāre tired of watching artists suffer because they donāt know how to shift with the latest formula of āwhat every artist should be doing to blow up!!!!!ā
Itās no secret that artists HATE asking fans to pre-save⦠and fans hate pre-saving. Until you can post that pre-save link without feeling like youāre asking for a FAVOR, leave it alone.
Sure, there are some cool platforms to help make this process easier by automatically saving future releases, but what good are those tools if the people getting those notifications arenāt activated and ready to hit play?
Focus on nurturing the people who are actual fans, even if thereās only one. Congrats, your fan club just started.
Get to know them. Understand why they keep coming back. Make them feel like youāre doing this for them - and with them.
THATāS how youāll create a lifetime career, not just a single that does kinda better than the last.
Disclaimer: We believe thereās a time and place for everything, so this advice doesnāt apply to everyone. We tailor every artistās release strategy to fit their current goals + long term ambitions š¦

We wish artists would realize⦠itās not all that complicated šš»āāļø
Weāre at a really interesting point in social mediaās evolution. Yes, trends and ābest practicesā still have an impact, but the average social media consumer is OVER creators (and artists, by default) trying so hard.
Stop thinking so big. Can you believe I just said that?
Spend less time worrying about the possible 10,000 strangers who MIGHT watch half of your video, and spend more time watering the small garden of energized, passionate fans who are ready to show up for you.
DM us your biggest social media dilemmas and weāll tell you what weāre *actually* thinking š

āAgainā is the newest track from @jordyntareaz that poses questions of introspection and self-discovery that we may be too afraid to ask ourselves. Tareaz bares it all in this raw and emotional ballad, exposing her own vulnerability in an elegant, elevated package.
Itās been an absolute pleasure working with Jordyn, and seeing her shine is such a gift!

Excuse us while we rant š¢
The lack of transparency in the independent music scene results in artists making decisions that could deeply hurt them in the long run. Our biggest mission is to educate artists and instill confidence in them, especially on the business side.
Here are some of the most common mistakes we see:
šWorking with someone just because they compliment you!
Artists fall hard and fast for someone who loves them back. But the thing is, weāll ALWAYS be honest if we donāt think weāre a good fit for your needs - even if that means pointing out things you might be unaware of. Because itāll save us ALL stress, money, and time if weāre realistic from the start. Not every marketing agency, PR firm, or mgmt company has that mindset, so be cautious when entering into any working relationship.
š¤ Submitting to any playlist!
We usually donāt even mention playlists when we first meet an artist who wants to work with us. Why? Because the playlisting waters are MUDDY to say the least. Tools like Submithub or PlaylistPush can make pitching more accessible for artists on a budget, but even the most trusted submissions have some risk. We cannot count how many times an artist has emailed us in a panic because Spotify removed their best song due to botted streams.
We like to view playlist as more of a cherry on top rather than THE goal of campaign. This mindset has led to countless editorial and user-generated playlists for our clients, because we focus on substance (quality content, artist identity) first.
š Not following up with contacts!
Weāre all guilty of it. You meet someone at a mixer, get their number, annnndddd never set up that Zoom. Make it a 2024 goal to touch base with your contacts on a monthly basis. DONāT wait until you need them for something. This is truly one of the ākeys to successā as an independent artist right now.

š® 2024 Visions š®
We love @mstrpln.co to keep our company goals in order as we plan the new year + we always recommend the plannerās customizable budgeting features to independent artists!
HEREāS WHAT WE PREDICT FOR 2024:
Weāre gonna stop worrying about things we canāt control - like someone opening our email⦠or whether or not a client follows our advice š«£
But we ARE gonna keep chronically planning and pushing our clients to do the same⦠sorry guys but itās because we love you š«¶
And lastly, weāre going to keep our client roster very limited so we can continue giving the best support across all artists āØ
That means being more selective and patient when signing anyone new, but if thereās one thing weāre going to avoid next year, itās burn out.

We knew this day was coming! š
This is a HUGE development for artists, especially independent artists who use the social media app as one of their main promo tools.
One of the biggest hurdles for artists on the app has been migrating followers into DSP streams. It canāt feel so frustrating when a video pops offā¦with only a slight bump in actual listeners.
This feature will allow artists to better reach the fans who genuinely love their music, and itāll make it easier for fans to discover rising talent.
Weāll be sharing more about how you can best use this new feature to your advantage as it rolls out. Got questions in the meantime? Weāre just a DM away š«¶
