The 17th season of the Dilijan Concert Series has come to an end—my second as Artistic Director. I would like to thank everyone who took part and helped bring each concert to life: our incredible musicians, the entire team, and of course our boss, VatscheBarsoumian—a true enthusiast and a patriot of music. It’s people like him who keep our musical community alive. As part of this series, we presented several landmark performances, including The Art of Fugue by Johann Sebastian Bach and The Soldier’s Tale by Igor Stravinsky. We performed beautiful music by Komitas, Babajanyan, Chenotaryan, Khachaturyan and many othersThe season concluded with the world premiere of What’s Next by Anna Drubich, which was met with great success. See you next season!

“ Brother, quit whining and let me hear the Bayan!” Back in his time, Mstislav Rostropovich, as a soloist of the Moscow Philharmonic, was assigned to a performance brigade sent to entertain workers on the virgin and fallow lands campaign. They arrive at a field camp: people are sitting on the ground, and there’s no piano. Rostropovich gets nervous: how can he perform without accompaniment? Yan Frenkel reassures him: — Slava, I’ll accompany you on the accordion. No one will notice. So Rostropovich begins playing the cello, while Frenkel does his best to accompany him. Suddenly, from the back of the “auditorium,” a huge farm worker in overalls stands up and starts making his way toward the “stage,” stepping over the people sitting there. Rostropovich whispers to his colleague: — Yanik, I don’t like the look of his face… play faster! But they don’t manage to finish. The man reaches the musicians, places his enormous hand on the cello, and in a deep commanding bass says to Rostropovich: — Brother, quit whining and let me hear the accordion.

There are two kinds of string players. One is happy sticking with the same brand of strings, the same rosin, not really interested in trying new endpins or bridges — and they’re happy. The other is constantly searching for something different: new strings, new rosin, new bridges, new tailpieces. Bugging frieds and family-does it sound better now?-and getting really upset if their friends and family can not hear any difference at all! Happiness is short and fragile — just when everything finally looks and sounds right, it ends the moment a colleague asks, “Have you heard about this new string/rosin/endpin?” It’s not hard to guess which type I am.

✨ March 7 | New Residence ✨ We’re excited to welcome Sergey Malov @spallenmann_official for a special evening in a new residence. Sergey is a rare artist who moves between violin and the extraordinary cello da spalla — a shoulder-played cello from Bach’s time that’s almost never heard live. Sergey is internationally recognized for his genre-defying musicianship and deep historical curiosity. He appears regularly at major festivals and halls across Europe and beyond, and is admired for bringing early music traditions into vivid, modern life — whether through virtuosic Paganini or thoughtfully reimagined Bach. He’ll be joined by Evgeny Tonkha @evgenytonkha and Steven Vanhauwaert. Program highlights:
- Johann Sebastian Bach
- Niccolò Paganini
- Franz Schubert As always — music, community, conversation, and wine.
We can’t wait to gather together and share this special night with you. 🎫 For tickets please proceed to LINK IN BIO 🤍 K17
