Exhibition: UNBROKEN Evewright Arts curated: Unbroken, a banner art and sound installation on display in Ocean Court, National Maritime Museum, Greenwich from 29th November 2025 to 16th February 2026 The art installation Unbroken uses Naval military uniforms and the African currency £££ Kissi Penny $$$ as visual symbols to ask profound questions about who holds power, what has value, and how the official systems and institutions of the past (like the Navy) were instrumental in a crime against humanity, framing this critique through the lens of maritime history and the ocean’s role in global injustice. OCEAN JUSTICE RESIDENCY In June 2025 the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, opened Ocean Court. This redevelopment transformed the heart of the Museum into a dynamic, vibrant space for visitors to explore knowledge and understanding of the marine environment and reflect on our cultural and spiritual relationship with the ocean. Evewright Arts undertook a five-month residency across the sites of Royal Museums Greenwich to explore and respond to the theme of ‘Ocean Justice’. They researched collection objects and archives, held a dialogue with staff and visitors and reflected on the Museum’s location, history and purpose. Unbroken, an art installation of 16 large-scale banners spanning Ocean Court, was created as an outcome of the research journey experienced by artist EVEWRIGHT and writer and poet Ionie Richards. The evening will be hosted by Sarah Lockwood, Head of Engagement, Royal Museums Greenwich and the talk moderated by Michael I. Ohajuru DUniv, FRSA Art Historian. Unbroken was created as an outcome of the research journey experienced by acclaimed multidisciplinary artist EVEWRIGHT and Ionie Richards as a creative response to the tragic events on board the British slave ship Zong. This event will be held in Ocean Court at the museum and offers a unique opportunity to explore the creative journey and the themes that shapes their practice. Evewright Arts held a series of public engagement events as part of the residency and the Unbroken exhibition. The closing night event is the final in this series which included a successful Launch event and two Life Drawing classes, Drawing the Black Body, in October 2025 and January 2026. EVEWRIGHT’s work celebrates Black British stories and sparks dialogue about identity, heritage, and belonging in the UK today. Exhibition Opening: Unbroken Art Installation by EVEWRIGHT Poem by Ionie Richards � 29 November 2025 – 15 February 2026 � Ocean Court, National Maritime Museum Romney Road, Greenwich SE10 9NF Artist EVEWRIGHT creates a stunning art installation on 16 large banners that spans Ocean Court along with poetry from Ionie Richards. Join us for the opening launch of Unbroken, an Evewright Arts curated, Artists response to the massacre of 133 enslaved African people by the crew of the British slave ship Zong in 1781. The evening will include a sound and visual Storm scape and a Libation ceremony to honour our ancestors. The ceremony will be performed by Dr ‘H’ Patten, MBE, and Peter Badejo MBE., two of the UK’s leading African dance practitioners along with musicians Nii Kwartey-Owoo and Charles James. This unique ritual will contribute to an immersive and moving experience in remembrance to those who lost their lives. LAST WEEKEND at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition 2025 £££ Kissi Penny $$$ In these works, EVEWRIGHT subverts notions of worth and value imposed by the transatlantic slave trade and colonial subjugation. £££ Kissi Pennies $$$, 2023, is a series of sculptures and a conceptual currency whose title originates from the Kissi Penny, a West African currency which took the form of a thin iron bar flattened on one end with spiked splayed-out prongs on the other. £££ Kissi Pennies $$$ were historically traded among the Gbandi, Kissi and Mandinka peoples, among others situated around the West African Atlantic coast. Alongside this status, Kissi Pennies were also used to adorn burial sites and thus gained religious connotations. These sculptures or, as the artist calls them, ‘coins’ confront the notion of currency, and worth in relation to the value of human life and modern-day migration. As each £££ Kissi Penny $$$ artwork is sold, a fresh financial transaction takes place, releasing ‘THE COINS WITH SOUL’, an ancestor to be set free with hope by the artist. © EVEWRIGHT.
