My first artists book since college!
The Women
Cloth, watercolor, pen & ink, gold leaf
3” x 4”
I’ve been reading voraciously here lately, and just finished The Women by Kristen Hannah. When I’m reading I’m constantly highlighting passages that I love and then I will also write them down in a notebook. This time I was so inspired by the book that I decided to create an artists book with my fav quotes and artwork.
This book totally wrecked me. However if you’ve read any of Kristen Hannah’s work you know she breaks and eventually puts you back together. This was such a beautiful story and reminded me that my strength comes from all the women that came before me and that I stand on their shoulders! It also reminded me that the women in my life are my life line! I am so happy that this time in space gave me you all! @dawn_thing1@saraearth@chelalyn89 and my mama!
One quote that is in my artists book that seems to be fitting for right now… “it’s hard to see clearly when the world is angry and divided and you are being lied to.”
Love you all xoxox ES

“We went down into the silent garden. Dawn is the time when nothing breathes, the hour of silence. Everything is transfixed, only the light moves.”
― Leonora Carrington
Day 3 - A Painting a day - or maybe every other day 🤷🏻♀️
I had a hard time with this one using only one size brush. Trying to capture the light in the glass when you’re restricted to a large brush is not easy!! But as you see I like challenges ❤️

“In order for connection to happen, we have to allow ourselves to be seen - really seen.” - Brene Brown
Day two of a painting a day. When I was in college, my third year I think, my painting class had a visiting professor. I was excited and so ready to learn. Four weeks in I was feeling lost. He had us painting 5 10 paintings a week - and this was with all my other classes annnnnd I was raising three kids by myself and working. I finally confronted him and confided that I was exhausted and didn’t know why I was being made to produce so much work. He told me Eve, when the class started you brought me several drawings to review and one painting that took you 2 months to paint. I want you to start painting like you draw. Your drawings look like they are an extension of you so much so that you don’t think about it. I want you to not think, just paint!
So I’m not thinking, just painting!

“Creativity is not a talent. It is a way of operating” - John Cleese
When you’ve been in a creative slump for so long it’s so hard to break back into being prolific. Yes Mamas Swwet Tea has helped, but those are more of wanting to tell a story - one that is wrapped up in holding on to this short life we live and not thinking about the small amount of time I have with my parents, my mama! Seeing her age and being thankful I still have time! Precious time!
Most of you don’t know painting was my focus in college. I love painting! It’s so much a part of me that I can get lost in time and thought.
So, I’m going back to my practice in college of painting every day! Not thinking about it and just doing it. Letting it become an extension of myself again!! ❤️❤️❤️.
Last few paintings are from college.

Years ago, late 2018, I had an artist (@hubertdnealjr )who was going to show in the galleries in February 2019 where I worked at the time. He was a black male artist whose work was going to focus on portraits and the current administration (trump1.0). He was a full time professional artist, his work was powerful and was represented by prominent galleries. The current interim executive director (white female) told me that his work was controversial and was concerned that it was too political. Furthermore told me that if I moved forward with this artist and work I would lose the funding from our white donors!
I did fight to keep this artist and work, but to make a long story short - the white supremacist won and his work was not exhibited.
You can find his work here @hubertdnealjr … his work is amazing. So much truth and raw beauty! Btw I heard Titus Kaphar once say my work isn’t political it’s personal!!!
I’ll be honest I want to throw up Everytime I think about it - however this was just a taste of what POC and disenfranchised communities/people deal with on a DAILY basis!
I feel like I am right back there again!

As Lori McKenna writes in Lorraine:
When this world spin as hard as it does
We both know how it shakes some people up
So how did you decide to give me so much love 💕
I can’t say enough how grateful I am for all the love you all give to me! Close friends, family and even coworkers! You know who you are!
Sunday reminder! - we in this resistance together ✊🏻
Wellness Wednesday reminder…. DON’T LET ANYONE TAKE YOUR JOY!
Am I mad, yes I’m mad!!!!!! Half of America knew this would happen. However now we must move forward. Protect your heart and your joy and your MIND. Do not feed into the fear - that’s what they want! Fear is the mind killer!!! Do not stop living! Coming from a woman who raised three kids on her own (with little to no money) find ways to budget, stop buying crap, eat well, read more, spend time with your family and friends, welcome new babies into the world with joy, rescue a cat or dog, create, build that garden, buy that house, DO WHAT BRINGS YOU JOY! This is radical activism!
I’ll be following this post with dialog to use when calling congress folks and your representatives. The words we use now is important. Use that beautiful intelligent mind of yours!
I love you all ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Left this valley a year ago this month after calling it home for almost three years. This land holds my heart! That Gunni love 💕 is still strong as ever. Thanks @heyderjopayne for hosting me while I play and reconnect my soul for a couple days!
