Joe Lovano gave the Village Vanguard a benediction last night. His current group with Marilyn Crispell, Ben Street and Andrew Cyrille combines something of the Paul Motian aesthetic with late Coltrane. It was a great set.
The first night I got to New York City in the fall of 1991 Iwent down to the Village Vanguard to hear Joe Lovano‘s group with Tom Harrell, John Abercrombie, Rufus Reid and Ed Blackwell. Lovano told me that was his first week at the Vanguard as a leader.
