The wondrous Emma Gladstone. What an indescribable loss for the arts world, dance in particular, and for all of us who had the privilege to call her a colleague and, above all, a friend. I am just one of many whose life was forever changed because of her beautiful presence. I am just glad I got the chance to tell her. I have never been fond of flags or military parades and it certainly feels weird to be celebrating with ambulances lined up outside of hospitals. HOWEVER, it is always the right time to say thanks to a brave generation of Greeks and Hellenophiles, who rose up against a mighty oppressor, and are the reason we now have the luxury of being keyboard warriors. It is also the time to high five the Greek diaspora who have joined in from across the globe (we miss you!) and, above all, to acknowledge a new generation of Greeks like @antetokounbros and @blackmorris37 , who are much closer to those gutsy forefathers than most of us will ever be. Χρόνια πολλά you mental, infuriating and lovable corner of the world!
So hello February, but where did January go? Apart from the Biden inauguration, 2021 hasn’t been the best so far. Lord knows I miss seeing my friends and eating out and I really missed having the opportunity to recommend places to our lovely clients this summer. Flags and the unfortunate right wing connotations make me feel uncomfortable. I hate parades and the show of military power or children dressed like we’re in 1950. The one good thing to come from the pandemic is that we’ve skipped all the unnecessary “patriotic” fanfare. Celebrating the Greeks saying no to fascism means so much more this year. So here’s to the brave ones, those who take a stand on the mountains of Albania or the streets of Athens. Happy «όχι» day!
Today marks 100 years from the birth of Melina Mercouri. I remember standing in a TV channel waiting room as a student and feeling a gush of air as she walked in. She was already seriously ill by then, but I have never seen a woman command a space like she did at that moment. She smiled at all of us, said hello as if she knew us, and walked past in her impeccable outfit and gorgeous statement accessories. Happy birthday Ms M ❤️
World mental health day feels more personal this year. It’s an ongoing battle, for those who are are losing their grip on what makes them happy, and those who are there to hold them up until they’re able to again. For our clients who are after more than just a holiday, we are here for you, and will do whatever we can to give you the pause we all sometimes need so we can face reality again.
