It’s world theatre day okayyyyy!! What an opportune time for an understudy dump… I rarely post footage of me onstage for many a reason but here are a few I’m proud of along with some people I’m proud of and have learned so much from 🫶🏻
Some thoughts —>
A lot of my career over the last few years has included covering the leading lady, a task I’ve learned to cherish and respect ❣️ It is hard and it is invigorating and it is such a singular experience. My biggest takeaways:
• Women are brilliant. I count it a privilege to have been hired to watch and observe so many smart actresses work. Each of them shines in their own remarkable way and I’m so grateful for the free education they’ve given me. Not to mention their friendship 💕
• A lil piece of humble pie is good for the soul. Let’s just call it what it is - the understudy is not the star! In an industry where it’s so easy for praise and “getting your flowers” to feel like lifeblood, understudying has forced my hand to ponder what the work is really about and where my worth truly lies.
• Our brains are capable of so much more than we know. Any time I go on in a cover track I am so in awe of the way that God has designed our bodies… the combination of preparation, prayer, and a massive adrenaline rush will never fail!!
• It truly does take a village, and going on as an understudy has highlighted that in BOLD for me. From the dressers, to the music director, to stage management, when you’re on, everyone else is on their A game to make sure you’re able to thrive. I’ll never forget once when I was playing Eliza, I went up on my very first line (🙃) Luckily, I was kneeling on the ground directly in front of our MD, @maestrodar , who locked eyes with me from the pit and calmly whispered the first few words - saved the show. A hero.
• Teaching your people how to sneakily, yet properly bootleg is always a worthy investment. I’ll just leave that one there.
When I stop and look around for a sec I feel such gratitude that telling stories in this way is a part of my life. What a gift it is to love and live in this community in any and all capacities 🫶🏻

Spending time with Eliza Doolittle may just be my favorite thing to do on this here planet. My heart is overflowing after hopping back onto Wimpole St. for a few weeks @ivorytonplayhouse ~ what a loverly group of people to continue exploring this story alongside 🫶🏻

Every year I’m blown away by how much more there is to learn and love in this life. I’m feeling grateful for slow days, hard work, flower gardens, consistent friends, and all the small, colorful joys God has opened up my eyes to appreciate this year 🫶🏻 @micayla.dane.pollock introduced me to this beautiful quote from Annie Dillard and it’s stuck with me - “How we spend our days, is of course, how we spend our lives.” Focusing more on how I spend my days instead of worrying about next year ¨̮
