Three day show. 80 cars. One emotional support wife.
Wednesday practice:
Cody rolls out and sets FAST TIME, if there’s such a thing as “fast time” in practice.
We’re feeling confident. I’m already mentally planning the victory post. The haters are silent. The vibes are immaculate. No mention of calling Mason to have him sub in.
Thursday:
3rd in the qualifier.
1st in the heat. (Cue me acting like we own the place.)
And then… 8th in the main.
Not terrible. Not amazing. Just enough to keep my blood pressure slightly elevated but still manageable. We’re still in this. I’m still pleasant.
Friday:
5th in the qualifier.
4th in the heat.
11th in the B Main.
The slow descent begins.
We’ve left potential podium territory and entered character building territory...again. Our character is strong at this point. Murmurs begin, Mason checks to see if his race suit is in the trailer.
Saturday:
First qualifier.
Green flag drops.
Immediately the carburetor becomes a mud storage unit.
The track was so wet we could’ve stocked trout in it. He pulls off at the green because the carb is packed full of mud.
At this point I am no longer a calm wife. I am a moisture analyst. A mud critic. An unpaid track consultant.
Now we’re back where?
The C Main. Of course. Because the Caged Clone loves familiar territory. Mason paces around waiting to get the call like he’s Joe Burrow’s back up QB, but Cody wasn’t going to quit now. He’s ready to conquer that C Main…kind of like it did him in his first race.
He finishes 7th in the C Main.
One spot out of the transfer.
One spot away from freedom. One spot away from redemption. One spot away from me acting normal.
Started with fast time energy.
Ended with C Main trauma.
If there were points awarded for passion, sarcasm, and aggressively judging track moisture levels from the stands, I’d have swept the weekend.
The debacle continues.
Got rid of the “X” and added a little style to go along with the weekly race recaps.
