the ripping paper was not planned until it started happening naturally — a beautiful surprise, made possible only by working with physical material !
ultimately this brief moment will become integrated in a larger piece, commissioned by @mend_syracuse around a powerful personal essay on Time & Prison by Marvin Wade @truespiritualactivist . (I’ve been working on that film for a few months now and can’t wait for us to share once finished !)

“Water Cycle,” short animated loop 🩵 38 drawings improvised frame-by-frame in Procreate — starting with a water droplet without knowing how it would fall, letting it take me where it seemed to want to go.
starting this new art account @evanbode.art because I want to feel freer to make + share quick work in a shorter format — trying to resist the feeling that for something to be worth sharing, it needs to be a major project involving 12 months of concentrated time & labor like my past 3 mfa films (this expectation being creatively stifling & too much pressure).
also setting an intention first-thing with this loop to remember that I am a natural organism (not a machine & not a brand) with wandering creative inspiration that sometimes flourishes & sometimes fades, fluidly changing in cycles & seasons, with freedom to play across mediums & aesthetics and simply exist as it will, when it does 🙏

Today is also day 426 of the most heavily documented, live-streamed genocide in world history, funded & supported by the United States under the Biden administration.
The U.S., using billions of american tax dollars, has invested the full force of its power on the global stage to veto ceasefires and ensure that the annihilation of children & families using U.S. money & weapons can continue unimpeded.
Israel continues its aim to annihilate Palestinian life and render Gaza uninhabitable through tactics of violent terror, including daily civilian massacres, destruction of life-sustaining infrastructure, and mass starvation. The violence is marked by its strategic targeting of hospitals, healthcare workers, journalists, refugee camps, and above all, for its targeting of children.
The number of kids who have been mass-murdered in Gaza this year far outnumbers that of any other global conflict this century. Gaza has the highest number of child amputees per capita of anywhere in the world. Half of Gaza’s population is children. This will become known as a genocide of children.

for the past few months, i’ve been creating a 6-minute animated documentary in collaboration with the words & voice of brilliant writer Marvin Wade @truespiritualactivist , based on excerpts of his essay “Time and Prison: Are they Mutually Exclusive?” which was published in the recent issue of @mend_syracuse and is available to read online.
in the essay, Marvin reflects on his 25 years of incarceration and the positive transformation he achieved—not because of, but in *spite* of, the conditions of a prison system that tried to destroy his humanity and prevent his growth at every step of the way. through lived experience, Marvin offers insights for us all about cherishing, using, and befriending the time that exists around us all.
