🔊 In her series of formalist portraits, the artist explores the subjective experience of listening as it unfolds through repetition and duration. Through intimate portrayals of the filmmaker’s friends immersed in acts of listening, the camera captures subtle shifts in expression and perception – quite beautifully on 16mm.

Tonight, @evagiolo ’s 𝘚𝘪𝘭𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘊𝘰𝘯𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴 is part of a short film programme dedicated to the films of @elephy_production , curated by Belgian documentary filmmaker Annick Leroy for her Carte Blanche at @cinematekbe .
In 𝘚𝘪𝘭𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘊𝘰𝘯𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴, Giolo silently and patiently portrays the same action over and over again: her own body and those of her loved ones merge anonymously in a series of embraces, captured on blue-gray, faded 16mm film.

Presenting ‘Becoming Landscape’ by Eva Giolo, 2024 (20 mins), one of the seven short films featured on Night 1 of the 2025 SET Film Festival.
A lyrical portrait of Canada’s Fogo Island, ‘Becoming Landscape’ takes the form of a natural history research report, situating the viewer within its quiet acts of observation and composition. The film meditates on the shifting, co-constitutive relationships between body and landscape, dreaming and looking, consciousness and time’s circular rhythms. As one voice in the film reads aloud, ‘a landscape is a state of mind’, or perhaps more accurately, ‘a state of mind is a landscape’.
@evagiolo is an artist working in film, video, and installation, focusing on the female experience. She employs experimental and documentary strategies to explore intimacy, permanence, and semiotics.

🏔️ New Interview! “The Chorus of the Land”: a conversation with Eva Giolo on MEMORY IS AN ANIMAL, IT BARKS WITH MANY MOUTHS, which celebrated its world premiere at @iffr earlier this month as part of the Tiger Shorts competition.
“I decided that I’d like to make a film that focuses on language and the myths that were passed down via this primarily oral tradition. I frequently work with children, and for 𝘔𝘦𝘮𝘰𝘳𝘺 𝘪𝘴 𝘢𝘯 𝘈𝘯𝘪𝘮𝘢𝘭, they become the storytellers, in a way. They also helped me find some of my locations, such as caves or holes. The myths were frequently set in the caves around the mountains, so the idea was to have the children read and interpret these stories.” — Eva Giolo
