A historic mask that was both suppressing and empowering women. The Moretta mask was worn only by women and constituted a very potent game of attraction. To make themselves captivating, the Venetian women wanted to create mystery by concealing everything that gives feelings and emotions away most. The Morettamask was held to the face by a button on the inside which was gripped between the teeth. The lady was therefore completely mute and inexpressive, until she decided to respond to the advances of a man, offering her the sight of her face, too. - Maschere a Venezia, Mario Bellini 2000
