If you use an iPad and AirTurn DUO BT-200 bluetooth pedal to turn pages, this message is for you. AirTurn DUO BT-200 pedals will stop working once your iPad upgrades to the 2026 operating system. My iPad updated itself and then the pageturner stopped working properly (it would not turn at first, and then, when I clicked a second time, it turned through the end of the piece). Definitely not something you want to deal with on a concert day.
Here is what I have found out:
iOS26 has changed its bluetooth protocol to a system incompatible with AirTurn DUO BT-200. According to AirTurn, Apple has no intention of reverting this. (And AirTurn is unable to upgrade the system in its BT-200 pedals). Therefore, BT-200 pedals will no longer work with iPads that have the 2026 system software or later.
When I called AirTurn they apologized for the inconvenience and offered me a 50% discount on the newer version of their pedals. If you have been using BT-200, you probably want to purchase BT-500, which looks and feels like BT-200. The only obvious difference in the BT-500 is that it comes with a USB-C charging port. There is another pedal (PED500), thinner, but I was hesitant because it seems to require more precision on where to touch to turn the page.
If you are in the US, at the top of the AirTurn website, airturn.com you’ll see the message “We are aware of an issue affecting BT200 series pedals on iOS26. Click here if you are having problems” Then on that message, and then click on “Claim Your Offer” on the next page. A short Google doc pops up. Fill it up and Submit to get a link to purchase the BT-500 pedal at half price. In other countries, some retailers have agreed to offering the same offer as in the US. Contact AirTurn for details. Their contact email and telephone number are at the bottom of their website, and they do respond!
Of course, you could also move on to other pedal brands (or other tablets), but the above is a solid working option. I hope this helps! Back to practicing.

Loving every minute of my collaboration with the one and only Cuarteto Latinoamericano. Come if you can on Sunday, August 24, @musicmountainct to hear this remarkable string quartet in what may be their last season, after a brilliant 43 year long career together. Our collaboration includes clarinet quintets by Joaquín Gutiérrez Heras and Mozart. The program opens with string quartets by Boccherini, Stefano Scodanibbio and Gonzalo Castellanos Yumar.
Cuarteto Latinoamericano and I will offer a pre-concert talk at 2 pm, to review their groundbreaking career and share landmark performances and some information about the Gutiérrez Heras, who wrote the quintet for them. The concert is at 3 pm.
Cuarteto Latinoamericano is one of the world's most renowned classical music ensembles, for more than forty years the leading proponent of Latin American music for string quartet. Founded in Mexico in 1982, the Cuarteto has toured extensively throughout Europe, North and South America, Israel, China, Japan and New Zealand. They have premiered more than a hundred works written for them, and they continue to introduce new and neglected composers to the string quartet genre. Many of their first-ever recordings of quartets by composers such as Villa-Lobos or Ginastera were groundbreaking contributions to the field. Winners of the 2012 and 2016 Latin Grammys for Best Classical Recordings, they have been recognized with the Mexican Music Critics Association Award, the French Diapason d'Or, and three times received Chamber Music America/ASCAP's "Most Adventurous Programming" Award.
It was so much fun to collaborate with the Terra String Quartet yesterday! We performed the Mozart Clarinet Quintet at Treetops CMS, which presents its season concerts at the Carriage Barn Arts Center, a great-sounding art gallery at New Canaan's Waveny Park, CT. What a great space!
The Menuetto and the Variations movement of the Mozart Clarinet Quintet can gain a wonderful sense of spontaneity by adding embellishments. As soon as I took this route at the concert the Terra String Quartet was right there with me, adding their own embellishments in response. Way to go!
The concert opened with Seth Grosshandler’s Dances for String Quartet, a Connecticut premiere. This suite, in five short movements, sounded fresh and highly inspired, evoking the French Baroque in a most-inviting and beautiful manner. Loved it!
The program closed with Ludwig van Beethoven's Opus 132. The Terra String Quartet's performance of the slow movement, in the Lydian mode, was breathtaking. Wow!
Thank you Harriet, Amelia, Audrey and Chih-Ta. Already counting the days to our next collaboration!
Thank you Barbara, Jill, Joe and Nick, the tireless Treetops CMS board that makes it all come together.

Check out my interview with Jonathan Palevsky, Program Director at WBJC, Maryland’s Classical Music Station. Link in bio. We talked about the great Brahms Clarinet Quintet. Enjoy!
Join me and the Ulysses Quartet today, Sunday, Oct 27, at 3 pm, at the Peale Museum in Baltimore. We will be performing a Chamber Music Maryland concert that includes Seth Grosshandler’s Suite for clarinet quintet, and much more. The Peale is Baltimore’s Community Museum, housed in the oldest museum building in the United States.
Yesterday was our debut performance at Chamber Music Maryland’s main season, at the Horowitz Center, in Columbia, MD. It was a joy to share the stage again with the incredible Ulysses Quartet, in a program of music of Caroline Shaw, Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel, and Johannes Brahms. We loved Chamber Music Maryland’s great audience. Thank you for such a warm welcome!
Tomorrow we are sharing our passion for music with the students of Marriotts Ridge and Oakland Mills high schools in Marriottsville and Columbia, MD. Thank you Chamber Music Maryland!

The Brahms Clarinet Quintet has long been a loved work for its joy, its melancholy, its rapture, its sadness. Written in 1891, in what one scholar refers to as “a surge of fresh creative power” Brahms was inspired by the clarinetist Richard Muhlfeld, whom he called the greatest wind player alive.
Join us on Sunday, July 28, to hear this masterpiece live at Music Mountain, featuring the one and only American String Quartet, internationally recognized as one of the world's finest quartets, and Oskar Espina Ruiz, clarinet, whose clarinet playing has recently been described as “bubbling up through the strings like champagne bubbles in a narrow glass” (CVNC).
The program embraces the Brahms with Beethoven’s Opus 18/6 and Dvořák’s “American” string quartets.
Call the box office at 860-824-7126 for overflow tickets (the concert is nearly sold out).

Tonight’s sold out concert at Richardson Auditorium, Princeton University, will get a few extra standing tickets, we are told. Come if you can. Alfonso Fuentes is a living legend: an extraordinary composer, pianist, and humanist yet to be discovered. I am honored to be joining him on stage to perform his Ode to the Fallen Trees, composed during the catastrophic aftermath of hurricane María. The program also includes Voces del Barrio, a three-movement work for unaccompanied clarinet, and piano improvisations of traditional, classical, and popular musical pieces from the Caribbean and Latino traditions. Thursday, March 9, from 7:00pm - 8:30pm, at Princeton University's Richardson Auditorium.

Happy Holidays! Today I am cooking with the young ones in the house, preparing the bechamel with a twist of jalapeño pepper for tonight's bacalao croquettes. The cold weather is perfect to chill the bechamel outdoors! We have reserved the thick loins for bacalao al pil-pil.
Wishing you all the best of times with friends and family, zorionak, felices fiestas, happy holidays, happy cooking!
