The Juma’ah Masjid, better known as the Kerk St Mosque, in the heart of the city centre. Designed jointly by Johannesburg architect Muhammad Mayet and Cairo architect Abdel-Wahed El-Wakil, it was completed in 1990 on the site of Johannesburg’s first mosque, originally established in the 1890s on the edge of what was then a small but rapidly growing mining camp.

Sometimes after a long day of filming, you’re asked how it went, and you reply that today was truly challenging, nothing happened the way you’d envisioned, and you had to improvise your way out of a quagmire of broken plans and promises. The problem is, many people immediately respond by giving you pointless advice, and even consoling you for having a “bad day.” But your day wasn’t bad at all. It was exactly as it was supposed to be. And I don’t mean this in any cosmic or spiritual sense, but in a purely practical one. This is literally the process that the work requires. You plan thoroughly for a specific (and entirely realistic) scenario. You obsessively think through every detail of the story that you want to tell and the material you’ll need to tell it. And then you step out into the city streets and struggle to squeeze every drop of meaning you can out of the stubborn, uncooperative reality in front of you.
